In a conversation with Shiksha, Tanuja Puri, Assistant Professor at Jagannath International Management School (JIMS Kalkaji) talks about the teaching and instructional methods used at the institute which encourages self-learning and learning through active student industry interaction. Prof Puri has done her BCom (Hons) and MCom with a specialisation in Finance and International Business from Delhi University. She has cleared DOEACC ‘O’ Level and UGC NET exams. She has completed certificate course in “Urban101x: Cities X: The Past, Present and Future of Urban Life” from HarvardX (EDX-Online). She has taught Finance, Accounting and International Business Papers. She has been actively involved in organising and coordinating events, seminars and guest lectures and currently is in charge of the NSS-Eco Club and Photography Club of the institute.
Q1. What is the difference between the teaching methodology in your institute and others?
JIMS in this digital age focuses on implementing innovative teaching and learning techniques to impart knowledge and skills to students. A judicious blend of lectures, seminars, case discussions, group presentations, management games, syndicate discussions, and special lectures by professionals from industry and practical project works are commonly used to develop conceptual, analytical and decision-making skills and to prepare the students to face the challenges of the complex business and organizational environment. The teaching and instructional methods used at the institute encourage self-learning and learning through active student-industry interaction. The institute has been taking several initiatives on teaching and learning to anticipate and meet the current and future requirements of the industry and the corporate world. JIMS continuously strives to explore avenues and opportunities for its students and faculty to obtain exposure to the latest business practices and trends. Industry interaction and connection act as one of the prime drivers of Programme Outcome which aim to build leadership and a holistic understanding of the business environment. Partnership with CII, PHD Chamber of Commerce, NHRD, FIEO, ISTD, NEN, NIESBUD, WASME, UAS International provides a unique collaborative platform for the exchange of ideas, skill updating and training. Corporate linkages with Deloitte, AIMIL, KPMG, Amazon, Jones Lang La Salle, Monster.com, Glamour-Blue Ocean studios, ICICI Securities, EY, Singer, Microsoft, American Cyber Systems, etc who support JIMS by participating in activities such as Placements, Internships, Academic Development, Seminars and Conferences, Co-Curricular event etc. Seminars and Conferences on varied contemporary themes of business provide a platform for academics - corporate interaction for the exchange of ideas. Q3. What qualities do your students have that other college students lack?
Students at JIMS are highly competitive and enthusiastic in the current dynamic environment. They eagerly participate in intra-college and inter-college events organised by the institute. They have won awards and accolades in various competitions like case studies, Research papers, dissertations & internship presentations. They are actively involved in writing quality research papers along with faculty members in UGC Care journals. They keenly coordinate all the major guest lectures, workshops, conferences and seminars organised by the institute. Their participation in academic and co-curricular activities is also commendable. Q4. Do you think the curriculum of the courses taught in your institute fits the requirement of the industry?
A. At present, JIMS offers diversified courses through its flagship programmes PGDM & PGDM(IB). The curriculum is designed with a holistic approach to management. PGDM & PGDM(IB) covers diversified papers covering areas of Financial technology, International Financial Management, Venture capital & private equity, Digital Marketing, Corporate restructuring, Business Analytics, Data Visualization, etc. Additional certificate courses are offered like Certification by IBM in Data Catalyst, Advanced Excel, Digital Marketing by Internet School of Marketing, PDP by AMVI consultants, Financial Modeling by E & Y & Financial Services by NSE. The curriculum enhances the ability of the students to apply knowledge of management theories and practices to solve business problems at the national and global levels. Knowledge of management tools and techniques is acquired to solve cultural, societal, environmental, and sustainability problems. A. JIMS is always open to new ideas and opportunities that promote innovation, technology, science and entrepreneurship. The college through its curriculum promotes the aforesaid areas by offering papers in PGDM & PGDM(IB) like Innovation & Design Thinking, Emerging Trends in Information Technologies, Entrepreneurship Development and New Enterprise Management, and Operations Management. The college through IIC (Institution Innovation Council) in collaboration with e-cell, finance club and marketing club, has been actively organizing various events like guest lectures, seminars, competitions & workshops, to promote innovative concepts and notions of entrepreneurship and innovation. The college has developed and expanded the capacity of the incubation facility existing in the Institute i.e.; the JIMS ANDC Incubator. Also, mentoring and other relevant services have been provided through existing pre-incubation and incubation units to attract enhanced Start-up activity in the institute.
