B.Des. in Communication Design - Batch of 2023

A gamble with faculty and courses, good infrastructure and a creative environment.
Placements: Placements are available for the final project that is done by the students in their fourth year. Placements weren't offered for my batch during the third year summer internship. Many of the placements for the final project are big names, but they all fall under a more corporate setting.
Infrastructure: The college has an excellent library with a very good selection of design books. Recently the workshops have been refurbished and are in their prime. The media labs and other facilities are great, but getting permissions to use these facilities are getting harder. The studio space offers a creative environment, but Wi-Fi facilities are not the most reliable and only one device per student can be registered to the Wi-Fi. The mess and canteen services are sub par at best. The hostels have the bare minimum but are well maintained. Very little kitchen facilities are present at the hostel and the laundry services are minimum as well. Recently many problems have accorded with the laundry and hostel kitchen and no maintenance has taken place of the same.
Faculty: Most of the faculty are visitors, so the teaching experience with them changes constantly. Some aren't great but some are excellent. The curriculum extensively has been reducing over the last few years. The quality is changing, some for the better, some not for the best. The semester exams are alright.
Other: While the management is growing stricter and more close minded about many things, the campus life and some course facilities are excellent.

A decent college that can fulfill your design goals.
Placements: Since I am still in college and have not passed out yet, I can’t give you the best details on placements. But from what I have heard, my seniors who have passed out and those who tried for internships in the 3rd year have gotten good opportunities with the portfolios they presented.
Infrastructure: The college campus is well maintained, with a peaceful and green environment that supports focused learning and creativity. The design studios and classrooms are equipped with the basic infrastructure required for hands-on learning, including a common workshop with all kinds of materials and faculty available at all times. Common areas are spacious, and the campus provides a calm space for students to explore. The campus is a favorite place for any nature lover. The hostel facilities are pretty decent, with all essential amenities and infrastructure ensuring a sense of community among students. Security and cleanliness receive due attention, ensuring a safe and hygienic stay.
Faculty: The curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation in design thinking, practical skills, and creative exploration, encouraging hands-on learning and experimentation, which are essential for the design course. Faculty members availability can vary because the college brings external faculty members for each course, yet the college still makes efforts to bring experienced professionals.

B.Des. in Communication Design - Batch of 2026

If you want to learn design, this is the best place.
Placements: Talking about placements, under communication design itself, there are plenty of career opportunities. Each subject can turn out to be a career. For example, you learn advertisement, filmmaking, branding, packaging design, UI/UX design, animation, and many other subjects under the umbrella of communication design. In the future (maybe after the 4th year), students can choose whatever they love to do. In a batch of 20, each person is interested in different branches of design. So, one company cannot come to the college and recruit all students. You should find the company that fits you.
Infrastructure: Facilities and infrastructure are really great, but it depends on how you make use of them. Wi-Fi is available 24/7 in the academic building and hostel, but you can connect only one device (probably a laptop). We have a media lab for recording, photography, and videography, and a well-maintained workshop (especially for industrial design students but open to everyone). The hostel is very well-maintained and comfortable. All the rooms are double-sharing. Washing machines, hot water, and water purifiers are available. The food in the canteen is pure vegetarian, hygienic, and has a flexible menu.
Faculty: Faculty members and professionals mostly have high industry experience. Interacting with them gives you exposure to the outside world and get to know the various aspects of design. You can't always depend on faculty members to spoon-feed you. Faculty members are there to guide you. Of course, they teach, but you can't teach design the same way you teach other subjects. Here, you have the liberty to define your boundaries. Use faculty members to help you get there. Having a strong mindset to learn and explore is very important.
Other: I chose communication design because it is a broad umbrella. As I mentioned before, you get to learn the basics of different branches of communication design. As a student, if you can't choose a particular direction in design, it's always better to learn all the basics first and then decide what to focus on later. I find the course interesting, but I still wish there were more real-world projects included. Of course, we do real-world projects, but having more of them would be helpful.

Candidates will be given admission in BDes and MDes courses on the basis of:

  1. DEED 2025 entrance exam
  2. Shortlisted candidates have to next appear in a personal interview, which comprises a Portfolio Review round.

The final merit list will be prepared by considering both the factors.

Yes, DJ Academy of Design gives scholarships to college students from households earning much less than INR 5–10 lakh a year.

The scholarship is based on need and exact performance.

Students can practice from the second year.

Selection depends on profits and marks.
