The admission criteria for M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kanpur is based on a valid GATE score. The candidate must possess a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or any of the eligible branches of engineering and a valid GATE score in any of the eligible GATE paper codes. The eligibility criteria are available on the IIT Kanpur website. There will be no written test and interviews. The minimum qualification for admission to the M.Tech. program in different streams is a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or in any of the following branches for different streams of the department. The eligible branches of engineering and GATE paper codes for each stream are as follows:
Manufacturing Sciences: Aero Engg, Chem Engg, Metallurgy/MatSc Engg, Prod/Manuf Engg, Mech Engg. (GATE paper codes: AE, CH, MT, PI, ME)Fluid and Thermal Sciences: Aero Engg, Chem Engg, Mech Engg. (GATE paper codes: AE, CH, ME)Solid Mechanics and Design: Aero Engg, Civil Engg, Metallurgy/MatSc Engg, Chem Engg, Mech Engg. (GATE paper codes: AE, CE, MT, CH, ME)Robotics and Automation: Aero Engg, Comp Sc, Elect/Electro/Comm Engg, Mechatronics/Instrum Engg. (GATE paper codes: AE, CS, EC, IN, ME)
The applicant must have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or any of the other additional eligible branches for admission to respective streams of the department) with marks/CPI not below 55% marks (or Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a 10-point scale) or the minimum pass marks (or CPI) whichever is greater. A valid GATE score is needed, and the GATE requirement is waived for the B. Tech. graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two semesters in B. Tech.
