Commonly asked questions
On NEET Cutoffs
Q:   Can I get Medical College, Kolkata with a 480 score in NEET UG?
A:

The probability is low, but there are chances that you might get admission at the Medical college Kolkata.  590+ marks can get you a seat in the top colleges through state quota. The 480+ marks is a marginal score that has a chance to get you into the state quota. But if students get less than this, then they can get admission only in the private medical colleges. It is quite impressive if they get 400+ marks, considering the difficulty level of the examination.

The admissions for the medical colleges also depend on the category candidates belong to. If the candidate belongs to OBC category and they get a score of 480 marks then you might not get a seat at any government medical college. Since Medical college of Kolkata is a public or government college, possibility is less.

It is a great and affordable college.
Placements: Placements are not provided here, but they provide one-year mandatory internships. The stipend is very low when compared to other government colleges that give around Rs. 25000 per month. We only get Rs. 10,000 per month. Once you have completed your course, you can apply for a job as an MBBS doctor anywhere you want in India. Post-graduation is also an option.
Infrastructure: Our library is situated in a peaceful place, and it has almost all the books and magazines a medical student would need. The hostel has both two-seater and single-seater rooms. Each room has a study table, a chair, and other basic facilities. Rooms are clean. In the mess, they serve meals three times a day, with tea and snacks in the evening. PGs and rented rooms are available nearby, but they are very costly.
Faculty: Faculty members are probably the best among the medical colleges in this state. They are very helpful in clearing our doubts. During clinical postings, they provide an overview of the case and the relevant history before moving on to the diagnosis and management section.
Other: The annual festival is conducted in November. Many students are involved in social clubs, sports clubs, and NGOs like NMO India.

It is the best college in West Bengal.
Placements: Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata is considered the best college in West Bengal, and probably the best even in Eastern India, with 188 years of rich legacy, making it the oldest college in Asia. Almost 250 best students of the state, who cleared NEET are allowed to take admission in this prestigious institute, and out of them, only 110 are of unreserved category. All MBBS students have to do internships to get their degree and this internship offers a handsome package to the students. In medicine, one can start practicing once they complete MBBS while students also opt for PG for MD, MS, and DM for specialisations so there is no fixed package since it provides you humongous lucrative opportunities. since you have cleared one of the toughest exams at the UG level in India.
Infrastructure: Our college boasts of having Regional Institute of Opthalmology, which is the only one in our state making it the prime center of eye treatment. The oncology center is under construction which will open wide opportunities for cancer treatment. Along with that, we have Eden Hospital for gynecology and Green Building for gastrology and other specific OPD, along with general OPD and emergency. Classrooms are extremely spacious, and there are mainly 2 lecture halls the general lecture theatre, and anatomy lecture theatre. The Wi-Fi connection is a little bit slow. Library has a plethora of books to satisfy students' purposes. We have enough cadavers for students, a dissection hall, and our biochemistry lab is extremely furnished. Histology lab has some modern equipment and the physiology lab is also well maintained. There are 7 hostels for boys and 1 hostel for girls. The main boys' hostel is extremely spacious accommodating 4 students easily. The food is also good and reminds the students of their mother's homemade food. Medical facilities are abundant since the college is actually inside a hospital. Sports and games facilities are abundant, games like chess, table tennis, carrom, football, and cricket are being regularly organised.
Faculty: Teachers here are extremely helpful, qualified, and have a strong-hold on their respective subjects. They ensure that students can understand the concepts and they also organize small group discussions. MBBS course is a professional course and besides theory students also get exposure to the clinical part ensuring that students become skillful doctors. Semester exams are hectic with 3 internal exams and final university exams, also small exams are conducted every week, called items, which ensures that students study spontaneously.
Other: Orpheus is our hostel fest organised every year. Events like literary events and music competitions also take place regularly. The senior-junior relationship is excellent, and they voluntarily jump to help us whenever a student is in distress. There are abundant government scholarships that one can apply for.

It is the 1st medical college in India as well as Eastern Asia.
Placements: After completing the MBBS degree, students can opt to work as house staff members according to their score in the final year or can write a PG entrance exam. Though it's tough to get the desired subject in the desired college for a postgraduate degree, a number of students pass PG entrance exam very easily.
Infrastructure: Offline classes are held in lecture theatres. General lecture theatre (GLT) is the historical classroom where Dr BC Roy, Dr NR Sarkar and Dr RG Kar had attended classes once. Wi-Fi is limited to one-time use only. There is a facility for TT in GCR.
Faculty: There are 19 subjects in the MBBS course. Faculty members are competent enough to teach us. Semester exams are very much difficult to score. Pass marks, i.e., 50% of marks seem to be difficult, which is very uncommon for school going boys or girls. MB exams are easier than semester exams. There are 9 semesters and 4 MS in the entire curriculum.
Other: They didn't organise any fest since 2018 due to the political cause and Covid-19. MCK is all about Prem, Porashona and Politics.

Everything is very good. I suggest not to think about placements.
Placements: MBBS is a great course. I can guarantee that it is one of the best courses. It also makes students the elite member of society.
Infrastructure: It is a government college, but it has all the facilities like Wi-Fi, great hostel and everything. You won't face any problem, and it is quite comfortable. Overall, it is great.
Faculty: Teachers and professors are quite educated. Teaching quality is very good and much modernised. If you want to join here as a student, you can gain a lot of knowledge in 5.5 years.
Other: I have chosen this course because I am quite passionate about becoming a doctor. I dreamt of becoming a doctor since my adolescence, which is the main reason I opted for MBBS.

This college is really great.
Placements: All 4th year students need to do their internships. Then they prepare for NEET PG and appear in the exams for specialisation. Internship runs for 6months and followed by house staffship for 6months which is optional. NEET PG exam is based on all the subjects taught in MBBS (I. e, 19 ).
Infrastructure: College- Being the 1st medical institute in Asia it's buildings are a bit old, but I can assure you the lecture theatres have been maintained very carefully. Library facility is pretty good. Wi-Fi is also available inside academic building. Labs are well maintained.
Faculty: Teachers are very wise. This college is considered as the best medical college in west Bengal. So it's expected that the teachers have that kind of standards. There is no place for doubt on the relevance of the course. Most responsible professions considered.

College life is good but could be better due to poor infrastructure.
Placements: Placements in a medical college are not quite applicable. After the completion of course, everyone does an internship for a year, with a salary offered of Rs. 21,000 per month. Later, they can either apply for a government post in a hospital or in private or can go for postgraduation degree or practice privately.
Infrastructure: Infrastructure is not sufficient in terms of academics. The library is not big enough to accommodate students. Teacher to student ratio is insufficient. Teaching conditions are not comfortable. College canteen needs more staff. However, the quality of food is good, but hostel conditions are poor, especially in the case of food and hygiene. Safety conditions during work are inadequate, along with an inadequate supply of items like medicines, instruments, etc. Manpower is required more to handle the patient load. Online payment of college fees should be arranged because cash is quite troublesome. Office workers are quite slow. Wi-Fi is available, but it is of no use, as the signal is very poor and unusable.
Faculty: The college provides courses like MBBS, post-graduation, nursing, and paramedical. Teachers are well-qualified, but the teacher to student ratio is quite less. Innovative teaching methods are used like projectors, videos, and powerpoint. CMEs, quizzes, competitive exams are held regularly.
Other: Annual college fests are held, along with other extracurricular activities. The campus crowd and connectivity is good.

The minimum cut-off percentile for the unreserved category is the 50th percentile, while for reserved categories, it ranges from the 40th to 45th percentile. The minimum marks are subject to change due to factors such as the total number of candidates appearing for the test, exam difficulty level, and overall seats available. The National Testing Agency (NTA) announces the minimum marks required in NEET for MBBS on their official website. Candidates who secure the minimum marks required in NEET for MBBS are eligible for admission to government medical colleges.

Q:   How many students can do MBBS at Medical College, Kolkata?
A:

The Medical college Kolkata, offers a total of 250 seats for the MBBS course. The institute will take in only 250 students in a year. This number of seats are based on its capacity to accommodate the students. The course is offered for a total tuition fee of 40,500. The candidates are selected for the course based on their NEET-UG exam marks. These students must secure the maximum marks as the minimum cutoff or marks required changes from year to year. Since thousands of candidates write the exams it becomes necessary for them to clear the cutoff and go through the counselling process. The seats for MBBS are also limited, therefore candidates with the maximum mark and the highest ranks are selected by the Institutions. The cutoff also differs based on the category the students belong to.
