Students seeking admission to PhD must have completed their masters' degree with at least 60% aggregate (For General category candidates). In addition to this, they are required to go through an entranc exam and interview round conducted at the institute level for final admission. National Institute of Technology, Nagaland was established by the government of India in 2009. However, the first batch of NIT Nagaland students studied at NIT Silchar (2010-2014). Later on, NIT shifted to the home state of Nagaland in September 2012. Thereafter, National Institute of Technology, Nagaland was ranked a remarkable 200-250 band in the NIRF ranking in the year 2022. This institute is also known as NITN located in Dimapur district, Nagaland.

NIT Nagaland is not a deemed University. It is an autonomous Indian Government College. It is a fully funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.  It was established under an Act of Indian Parliament. The establishment of NIT Nagaland was included in the Eleventh five- year plan of the Indian Government (2007-2012) for giving technical education to the students of the state of Nagaland.

NIT Agartala is much better than NIT Nagaland. It was established in the year 1965 and recieved the tag of NIT in 2006. It is considered the second best institute in north east India after IIT Guwahati. The faculty members and facilities available here are much better than other NIT's. NIT Agartala has better infrastructure and also, have had good placement records. So, if you are looking for good placements, you should opt for NIT Agartala.
