Physics plays a very vital role in both JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Its marks are generally a rank-deciding factor. So, you need to have command of this subject to get a decent rank. In this blog, I will mainly tell you how to handle tough topics in Physics. First thing is that every student has different topics as their weak points. Some will find Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) as a tough topic while others may struggle with Electricity and Magnetism.

So, you can do a few things that will help you all along in the course. They are as follows:

  1. Make a short note of all relevant facts and formulas of the given topic. This is the most basic thing you can do to solve this problem. Then memorize and understand it thoroughly. This may seem like a very basic thing to do. But I can assure you that this is quite an effective process. And although how simple it may seem, very few students maintain this routine for the whole duration of their preparation.
  2. Never try to solve the problem intuitively. This is one of the most common mistakes done by the students. Try to rely on facts as much as possible. If you are at the initial stage of your preparation, then you should first write what is given in the question and what is asked. Then analyze it and write the relevant formulae. This process will be a bit longer but after some practice, you can directly skip to the step where you apply the formula.
  3. Read the question very carefully. Generally, in JEE Advanced problems some critical information is hidden in the statement of the problem. For example, in some problem, the temperature of a water vary from 2° to 6°. Now, the hidden information which you have to observe in this statement is that water attains its density maxima at 4°. This type of small information can make any problem really tough.
  4. Now the last and, according to me, the most important piece of advice is related to how you solve the problem. The beauty of the Physics lies in the fact that you can master almost any topic by solving about 20 - 25 different questions. I know, this may seem a little bit far-fetched, but this is true. The secret behind this claim is how you solve the problem. It is as follows:
    • You should understand that your aim is not just to get the right answer in any way. Think carefully before writing any steps and make sure that step is totally logical. You should have a proper justification for every step of your solution.
    • After you get the right answer, the next step is to analyze your solution and think that, is there any other way? Doesn’t matter if it is a short or long method. After solving in all the different way you can think of, the next step is to try to change the question. Just think of how the same concepts of the question can be asked in a different way.
    • And the last step is to try to frame a different question with the help of previous one. For example, you can make the condition more complicated like add some extra force or change the smooth surface to a rough one or whatever you can think of. This step is almost same as the previous step but it needs more research. Try to make as much of variation as you can.

If you follow this process, then by solving and after researching that one question properly, you would be able to solve a large set of decent problems. How large and decent the set is, will totally depend on how much seriously you followed this process.

These are some of the tips which you can use to handle most of the topics of Physics.

But still, there may be some topics which you would find extremely difficult and may struggle in solving the even basic question. To counter this problem you may follow these steps:

Q:   How many months are required to prepare for JEE Mains exam?
Q:   How to check JoSAA opening and closing rank?
Q:   How to crack JEE Mains in first attempt?
  • Study the relevant theory very thoroughly. You can use many different sources for this. The most basic is H.C. Verma. This book contains enough theory from JEE Main point of view. But for JEE Advanced you can refer to your coaching notes or you may also read up about the topic on the internet but make sure that you don’t go too deep into it. It will only waste your time. Just make sure that you understand completely whatever you are reading. You can take the help of your teachers or batch mates for this.
  • After reading the theory you should look at the solved examples very carefully. Then solve the similar type of question. Make note of your mistakes. This will give you an insight into where you are going wrong. You should solve all the examples of H.C. Verma. This should give you some confidence. If you still have some doubts, try solved examples from other sources.
  • Now, you are ready to attempt previous years’ paper. Try the problems of JEE Mains first. Don’t worry about the time it takes to solve. Remember this topic is your weakest point so you can afford to spend more time on this problem. If you are unable to solve the problem look at the solution and make a note of where you went wrong. Then solve the other problem, if you still have to refer to the solution then that means you need more practice. But don’t get frustrated if you are not able to solve for the first time. Repeat step no.2. Then try again. Do the similar exercise for previous years’ JEE Advanced problem. Remember JEE Advanced problems are much more complex than JEE Mains so it will require a lot more effort, so don’t get frustrated. Eventually, you will be able to solve the problems in the affordable time.

These are all the tips and advice which I can give to you so that you can handle all the topics of the Physics. But you should remember that it is pretty hard to follow all the things which are mentioned above. That’s why your mind should be disciplined. Don’t lose focus on your goal. Try to stay motivated. And always  ‘hope for best and prepare for worst’.
