Life can take you by surprise: Amrita Sokhi
I was in class VIII when I knew I had to pursue BTech after school and for that, I’d need Science in XI-XII. So, after class 10, in 2014, I chose Science with Economics as my subjects for the next two years. It was my own decision with no pressure from the family. I was sure I had to do it.
Cut to present, I am a third year Journalism student! How that happened, one might wonder. Well, as it turns out, life has quite a few adventures for you before you reach the final destination. That is what happened with me! Class XI was a massive blunder, to be honest. My marks suffered an all-time dip. To someone who scored 10 CGPA in class X, I was disheartened to my core seeing myself clearing exams with passing marks. As expected, the final marks were a massive blow. Then it was class XII- that point of time in every student’s life when he/she is told things like “All your school life is narrowed down to this”, “Just study hard this one year and all your life is set”, “Make us proud and set an example for your sibling”. Well, this does not help. I don’t think anything can help a student in that phase of life other than a strong support system including family and teachers.
By the end of class XII, I was convinced that pursuing Science in college was not my cup of tea. And honestly, there is nothing bad in admitting that. There are different streams for different people and not everyone can do everything! I did appear for Engineering entrance exams but didn’t clear any. What came my way was Journalism. I was an avid reader and a fairly good writer since an early age. So I thought why not give it a shot? What’s the harm?
To my surprise, I cleared the entrance test with pretty decent marks. And now, I love what I’m doing. There is passion and there is curiosity to learn. This is a totally different world with a lot of options to explore.
I am one of those lucky people for whom class XII marks never mattered while choosing a career path! So yes, life does take you by surprise. It can take you east when you planned to go west. It can give you lemons when you wanted cherries.
