CUET English Syllabus 2025: National Testing Agency (NTA) conducting body for Common University Entrance Test (CUET) releases the CUET 2025 syllabus for each section and subject. Candidates preparing for English language must check the detailed CUET English syllabus 2025. English as a language is included in the first section of CUET question paper. For, CUET UG 2024 maximum number of registrations were received for CUET English language. Among 13.4 lakh candidates, 75% of candidates appeared for English test followed by General test. Candidates will be able to choose from 13 languages to appear for CUET 2025 exam. Candidates will be able to check the updated NTA CUET 2025 datesheet when released. CUET English Syllabus 2025

CUET English question paper will consist of 50 questions out of which test takers must attempt any 40 questions. Refer to the table below to know the CUET English syllabus:

  • Reading Comprehension: There will be three types of passages (maximum 300-350 words):
    • Factual
    • Narrative
    • Literary
  • Verbal Ability
  • Rearranging the parts
  • Choosing the correct word
  • Synonyms and Antonyms
  • Vocabulary

Q:   How many subjects can a candidate choose in CUET UG while filling the application form?

A:

The numbers for choosing CUET sujects is six. Candidates can choose choose upto four or five domain subjects. 

Section 1A- (13 languages) Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, English, Hindi, and Urdu.

Section 1B- (20 languages) French, Spanish, German, Nepali, Persian, Italian, Arabic, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Konkani, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Santhali, Tibetan, Japanese, Russian, and Chinese.

Section 2- (27 subjects) Accountancy/ Book Keeping,  Biology/ Biological Studies/ Biotechnology/Biochemistry,  Business Studies,  Chemistry,  Computer Science/ Informatics Practices,  Economics/ Business Economics,  Engineering Graphics,  Entrepreneurship,  Geography/Geology,  History,  Home Science,  Knowledge Tradition and Practices of India,  Legal Studies,  Environmental Science,  Mathematics,  Physical Education/ NCC /Yoga,  Physics,  Political Science,  Psychology,  Sociology,  Teaching Aptitude,  Agriculture,  Mass Media/ Mass Communication,  Anthropology,  Fine Arts/ Visual Arts (Sculpture/ Painting)/Commercial Arts,  Performing Arts – (i) Dance (Kathak/ Bharatnatyam/ Oddisi/ Kathakali/Kuchipudi/ Manipuri (ii) Drama- Theatre (iii) Music General (Hindustani/ Carnatic/ Rabindra Sangeet/ Percussion/ Non-Percussion),  Sanskrit [For all Shastri (Shastri 3 years/ 4 years Honours)

Q:   Are NCERT books enough to cover CUET syllabus?

A:

Since the CUET syllabus is in line with the Class 12 Board exam syllabus, it can be safely assumed that the NCERT books are enough to cover the syllabus of the exam. Candidates must note that, CUET exam tests students' understanding of the concepts and ability to apply them in various situations. Therefore, to prepare well and get a good score, it is advised that students refer to other study materials and books designed for national level competitive entrance exams. The CUET UG syllabus is in tune with the Class 12 Board exam syllabus. The chapters and topics are similar to Class 12 syllabus. Unlike other UG entrance exams, CUET UG syllabus does not include Class 11 syllabus.

Q:   What is the difficulty level of the CUET exam?

A:

The difficulty level of the CUET exam ranges from moderate to tough. Since the CUET UG exam is held for multiple subjects and slots, the difficulty level of the exam varies from subject to subject. Sometimes, the difficulty level may also vary for different slots. The difficulty level of exam is also relative and the same exam's level of difficulty may vary for different candidates. While for the well prepared candidates, the difficulty level will be low, for the underprepared students, the level of difficulty will be on the higher side.

Q:   Is CUET syllabus based on CBSE syllabus?

A:

No, CUET syllabus is not based on CBSE syllabus as claimed by Education Ministry in Rajya Sabha on August 02, 2023. The CUET exam is designed to assess the general understandig of the candidate in subjects he/she has opted for. CUET UG is on of the biggest UG entrance exam carnival conducted for admission in cebtral, state, private and deemed universities. Candidates preparing for CUET UG exam must check the detailed CUET syllabus and CUET question paper to become familiar with the important topics and type of questions asked in the exam. 

Q:   Does the CUET syllabus also include chapters from Class 11?

A:

No, the CUET 2025 syllabus does not include the chapters or topics from Class 11 syllabus. The exam, which is conducted for multiple subjects and languages, has to be prepared by completing the Class 12 syllabus only. NTA has also released the subject-wise syllabus of the CUET UG 2025 exam, which will be held in third week of May in hybrod mode. However, students may refer to the Class 11 syllabus for better conceptual clarity and to make the base of the domain subjects stronger. But as far as the actual syllabus is concerned, it will only be based on Class 12 CBSE or NCERT syllabus.

Q:   Is CUET UG syllabus for Language section similar for all languages?

A:

Yes, CUET UG syllabus for section 1 is same for all sections included. NTA suggests the syllabus for all the sections. The syllabus for CUET Language section will be inclusive of following topics, but are not limited to:

  • Reading comprehension (This will include three passagaes of maximum 300-350 words):
    • Factual
    • Narrative
    • Literary
  • Verbal ability
  • Rearranging the parts
  • Choosing the correct word
  • Synonyms and antonyms
  • Vocabulary

To prepare for the CUET UG section- 1 Languages candidates must solve CUET sample papers and take mock tests to become familar with the type of questions that will be asked in CUET UG. There are no specific topics for reading comprehension. Candidates are advised to read the newspaper on daily basis to improve the reading speed and comrehension. 

Q:   How many CUET exam centres can I choose?

A:

Candidates can choose upto two exam cities of their choice while filling the CUET application form. NTA will make the best efforts to allot the city of examination to the candidates in the order of preference opted by them in their CUET 2024 application form. However, due to administrative/logistic reasons, a different city can be allotted to the candidates. Choice of CUET 2024 centre city will be limited to the State of Permanent Address or State of Present Address only. In case, there are very few candidates from a particular CUET exam centre city, the NTA reserves the right to merge one, two, or more cities.

Candidates will have the oppurtunity to choose the exam city while filling the CUET application form 2024. Candidates must carefully choose the exam cities. No request for change in exam centre will be entertained once the admit cards are issued.

Q. Does CUET have English Literature?

Ans. No, the CUET UG English question paper will not include literature. The question paper will include MCQs on Grammar and Vocabulary.

Q. What is a good score in CUET English?

Ans. Score above 150 is considered a good score in CUET English. Score rangine between 150-200 will help candidates attain 90-99 percentile in English. Candidates have score above 180 will have high chances of getting into top colleges for B.A Hons. English course.

Q. Are two languages compulsory in CUET?

Ans. It will be compulsory for candidates to pick any one language from Section 1A of CUET. The section 1A consists of 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Whereas, Section 1B will be optional. It includes 20 languages which are: French, Spanish, German, Nepali, Persian, Italian, Arabic, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Konkani, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Santhali, Tibetan, Japanese, Russian, and Chinese

Q. Is English Important in CUET?

Ans. Many CUET accepting universities/colleges has made English as a mandatory subject to qualify for the admission process. Candidates are advised to check the University and course wise subject mapping criteria for the course they wish to apply for.

Q. What is passing marks in CUET English?

Ans. There are no specified passing marks in CUET English. However, it is desirable for candidate to attain minimum of 90 marks in CUET English.

Q. How many questions are there in CUET English question paper?

Ans. CUET English question paper will consist of 50 questions. Out of the 50 questions, test takers will have to attempt only 40 questions.
