They form a Consortium to carry out all their admission-related formalities. National Law Universities (NLUs) are the first choice for law aspirants in the country. Several NLUs consistently feature among top law colleges in the country as per NIRF Rankings. In this article, we provide a detailed overview of NLUs in India, covering NIRF Law rankings, courses offered, seat matrix, fee structure, and admission criteria.
NLUs in India: National Law Universities are the premier institutes in India which offer high-quality law education with global exposure. Every student who wants to pursue their career in law aspires to get admission in the NLUs. They formed the Consortium to conduct the Common Law Admission Test nationwide. The candidates should note that the CLAT exam will be held on December 6, 2027.
NLU Delhi conducts its own separate exam known as AILET. The CLAT 2027 exam will be held on December 6, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The registration process for CLAT 2027 is ongoing. Candidates can fill CLAT 2027 application form till October 31, 2026. AILET 2027 exam will be held on December 13, 2026.

National Law Universities in India
National Law Universities (NLUs) offer best law education in India. Every year, these universities get thousands of applications, making the entrance exam highly competitive and demanding. This makes admission to these NLUs one of the toughest nuts to crack. Admission to 26 NLUs in the country is done through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). For NLU Delhi, the admission is through AILET Entrance Exam. Candidates can also use the CLAT College Predictor 2027 to check which NLUs they can get admission to, based on their CLAT Scores.

NIRF Law Ranking 2025: NLUs Position
The Ministry of Education releases the NIRF Ranking for all colleges every year.
The NIRF ranking 2026 is not yet released. The data will be submitted by February and the new list will be out somewhere between June and November 2026.

Yes, the application fee for AILET 2027 is INR .3,000/- (Rupees Three Thousand Five Hundred Only). Application fee in case of SC/ST and Persons with Disabilities (PWD) is INR 1,000/- (Rupees One Thousand Five Hundred Only). SC/ST and women candidates who are Below Poverty Line (BPL) are exempted from payment of the online application fee.

The CLAT cutoff means the minimum rank or score required to get admission into a National Law University (NLU). Candidates must get the cutoff to participate in the counselling process.

Yes, for some of them. Bahra lists scholarships based on JEE Main marks and CLAT rank, along with BUSET, CAT, MAT, and CUET percentile scores. I am not sure about NEET, so confirm that with the admissions office.

No you don't need to memorise every section. Focus on important concepts key provisions definitions and CLAT style application questions. Understanding legal principles is more important than memorising section numbers.
