Importance of Education in Hindi Journalism

Approximately 44% (~ 54 crore) of all Indians recognise Hindi as their mother tongue. Many other multilingual Indians recognise and communicate in Hindi on a daily. In addition to making media legible and understandable to this huge chunk of the population, an education in Hindi Journalism is important in the following ways.

  • Cultural and Social Context - Reporting a piece of news or putting out media content in Hindi is important since the audience is more accustomed to absorbing information in Hindi. Most of the stories that are being reported take place in Hindi. Also, the tone and moods of reporting and content, in general, are better understood in a familiar language.
  • Forming Public Opinion - (in continuation of the point above) With a better understanding, the audience is likely to form intelligent opinions about the news.
  • Numbers - A significant amount of the audience is Hindi-speaking. Hindi Journalism increases the reach of news, information and awareness in our country.
  • Political Undercurrents and Accurate Reporting - When representatives communicate in Hindi, it becomes easier and more efficient for the media to cover them in Hindi. It is a possibility that some aspect of the story is lost in translation. For instance, an assertive statement by public figures in Hindi may seem aggressive in English or vice versa.
