The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all its affiliated schools to appoint counsellors and wellness teachers for every 500 students studying in Classes 9 to 12. According to the new guidelines, every secondary and senior-secondary school should appoint counsellors to perform the duties as socio-emotional counsellors and career counsellors.
As per the Board's instructions, schools need to appoint one counselling and wellness teacher for every 500 students enrolled in Classes 9 to 12. The ratio of students to counsellor should be maintained at 500:1. The counsellor appointed should have necessarily completed masters or bachelor's in psychology (clinical, counselling, applied, educational) or masters in social work (mental health or counselling) or UG, PG degree in any subject plus a diploma in school counselling or child guidance and counselling.
The official order reads, "The appointed person shall possess the competencies for SEL delivery, crisis intervention, identification of mental health concerns, parent/teacher sensitisation, confidentiality etc. The appointed person must also undergo 50 hours of capacity building programs (CBP3) offered by the Board for psycho social counselling."
The Board further added that the CBSE counselling hub and spoke school model can be adopted by schools for providing counselling and well-being support to students.
CBSE Admit Card 2026 Out soon
CBSE will conduct the CBSE Class 10, 12 board exams 2026 between February 17 and April 11, 2026, in pen and paper format. The CBSE admit card 2026 Class 10, 12 is expected to be released in the last weekof January 2026. Schools will download the CBSE admit card for all students and get them signed by the school principal. Students need to collect their CBSE hall ticket from their schools and carry it on all exam days. No student will be allowed to write the exam without it.
