Fill vacant UG seats through Spot admission, hold Open Mop-up rounds: DU VC to colleges

More than 9000 undergraduate seats are still vacant in various colleges of DU

Delhi University will hold open mop-up round to fill vacant undergraduate seats across its affiliated colleges. More than 9000 undergraduate level seats are still vacant in various colleges of DU, despite admission through CSAS portal and several mop-up rounds.

During a recent meeting of the Executive Council of the University of Delhi, regarding the vacant seats of some colleges in UG programmes, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh suggested that an Open Mop-Up round should be considered for them so that students can get admission directly in the college through Spot Admission through physical admission.

The EC members authorized the Vice Chancellor to formulate a policy in this regard. DU has been holding online mop-up rounds to fill its UG seats, and has also now move to Class 12 results only, while CUET UG score was the primary criteria for admission to us UG courses.

Regarding the fourth year of UG started under NEP 2020, the Vice Chancellor said that research discussion rooms should be made in every college.

As per the university, when the issue of a clear policy for all colleges regarding admissions under ECA and Sports quota was raised by the EC members, the Vice Chancellor said that the provision of a combined 5 percent quota set for this is for all colleges, in this, the colleges can make a provision of 3:2 at their level according to the facilities available there, as to who to give 3 percent and who 2 percent. The EC members authorized the Vice Chancellor to formulate the policy.

Guidelines for PhD course

Guidelines for PhD courses were also passed in the DU EC meeting. It is worth noting that all the departments of the university offer PhD programmes in their respective subjects. As a mandatory part of this programme, a PhD course is being conducted by each department. It has been observed that there are variations in the format of the course being taught in different subjects. Hence, to bring uniformity in the PhD course in different subjects, certain guidelines have been prepared to be effective from the academic year 2025-26, which have been passed by DU EC.

Under these, the total credits required for the PhD course will range from 12 to 16 credits, with the distribution of the minimum 12 credits being as follows:

There will be 4 credits of Research Methodology or Advanced Research Methodology (for students who have already studied research methodology). There will be 2 credits of Research Publication Ethics, 2 credits of Research Tools and 4 credits of Discipline Specific Elective Course (related to research areas). Additional 4 credits may be obtained from DSE if required. This will be applicable to the specific field and such courses should not be offered in postgraduate studies. Teaching hours of PhD courses are included in the workload of the faculty. The courses offered in the PhD course should be of a higher level than the courses offered in postgraduate programmes.
