This test continues to be divided into Creative Ability Test (CAT), General Ability Test (GAT), it is followed by rounds for shortlisted candidates. NIFT Entrance Exam 2026 is scheduled to be held on February 8.

Creative Ability Test (CAT)

CAT checks how well a candidate can translate an idea into a visual form. Drawing skill matters but examiners look for how clearly a theme has been understood and presented.

This section usually includes:

  • Free hand sketching.
  • Theme based drawing.
  • Concept visualisation.
  • Basic use of colour and composition.

Questions now demand clearer thinking rather than heavy detailing. Simple drawings that communicate an idea effectively often score higher than elaborate work that lacks focus. Originality and relevance to theme carry more weight than artistic polish.

General Ability Test (GAT)

GAT is designed to test aptitude and awareness, both important for academic training in fashion and design.

GAT paper covers:

  • Quantitative Ability: Percentages, ratios, averages, basic arithmetic.
  • Analytical and Logical Ability: Reasoning, series, pattern recognition.
  • Communication Ability and English: Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension.
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs: Topics linked to fashion, design, culture and current events.

Recent pattern:

GAT questions check how well candidates apply basic concepts. Logical reasoning and GK sections now involve interpretation rather than fact based questions.

Role of CAT and GAT Across Programmes

  • BDes and MDes: Both CAT and GAT play a role in shortlisting.
  • BFTech, MFTech and MFM: GAT carries more weight.

Depending on programme, shortlisted candidates will be called for a Situation Test or Interview.
