IIT Delhi Updates: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi welcomed the opening of the Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE), a new collaborative research facility established by Hyundai Motor Group. This initiative aims to drive advancements in future mobility technologies, particularly in battery systems and electrification. It highlights the Group's dedication to fostering innovation that is specifically tailored to the evolving needs of the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market.

Joint Research Projects with IIT Delhi

As part of its long-term academic-industrial collaboration, the Group has initiated nine joint research projects with IITs. These projects span crucial areas including battery cells, systems, testing, and battery management systems (BMS), aiming to improve energy density, safety, durability, and diagnostic technologies. The initiative also focuses on exploring new materials and system components, advancing innovation in battery design and performance.

“We’re excited to work with India’s brightest minds in battery innovation. Collaborating with leading researchers and IIT professors through the Hyundai Center of Excellence will help us develop technologies tailored to India while contributing to its economy and society,” said Heui Won Yang, President and Head of R&D Division at Hyundai Motor Group. We see this partnership with India’s academia and industry as a foundation for building a sustainable future together.”

Beginning at IIT Delhi, the Hyundai CoE will grow in phases to establish a nationwide network of experts, linking top researchers and institutions across India. Currently, the Group collaborates with three IITs: Delhi, Bombay, and Madras, engaging around 30 professors. By December 2025, it plans to extend its partnerships to 10 universities, including non-IIT institutions, with around 100 professors involved in the initiative.

The Group is launching several initiatives to strengthen its collaborative ecosystem, including technology exchange forums, global conferences on battery and EV technologies, and policy dialogues with key stakeholders from government, academia, and industry. As the Group’s first academic-industrial partnership in a growth economy, the Hyundai CoE will become a central hub for research and innovation, driving future mobility solutions and fostering localized innovation for the Indian market.
