IIT Kanpur Conclave Highlights Women's Leadership in Power Sector Regulation

IIT Kanpur hosted a virtual conclave on the Role of Women in Power Sector Regulation, emphasizing the need for best practices to boost women's participation and promote gender inclusivity.
The Centre for Energy Regulation (CER) at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) hosted a virtual Regulatory Conclave on the "Role of Women in Power Sector Regulation." The event gathered key stakeholders from across the power sector, including representatives from Electricity Regulatory Commissions, Discoms, Gencos, NGOs, and academic institutions. The conclave emphasized the importance of adopting best practices to increase women's participation and advance gender inclusivity in power sector regulation. Stakeholders are working together to build a more resilient, gender-responsive policy framework through collaborative efforts.
The conclave featured a panel discussion with prominent national and international experts. The panel included Parminder Chopra (Chair), Chairman & Managing Director of Power Finance Corporation; Audrey Zibelman (Co-chair), Former Chairperson of the New York Public Utility Commission and Former CEO of the Australian Energy Market Operator; V. P. Raja, Former Chairman of the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission; and Anjuli Chandra, Former Member of the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Dr. Aprajita Salgotra and Prof. Anoop Singh from the Centre of Energy Regulations at IIT Kanpur presented a comprehensive study on the role of women in society and their involvement in the regulatory governance of the power sector. The study delves into the gender gap within this field, identifying significant factors that contribute to the underrepresentation of women, particularly in regulatory roles.
The research conducted a comprehensive analysis of regulatory commissions across India and nine other countries, supported by an extensive online survey. The findings revealed that cultural and social norms are significant barriers to women's participation in the sector. Key recommendations include ensuring equal access to capacity-building programs, implementing equal opportunity policies in workplaces, prioritizing recruitment preferences, and introducing gender-specific policies to promote inclusivity and diversity within the regulatory governance framework.
Prof. Anoop Singh announced that CER will offer additional discounts for female participants in its upcoming online Regulatory Certification Programs (RCPs). These flexible programs aim to support women in advancing their careers in power sector regulation, reflecting CER's commitment to gender diversity and professional development.
