The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee recently concluded a transformative 10-day teachers' development workshop as part of the Inspiring India in Research Innovation and STEM Education (iRISE) programme. Held from August 21 to August 30, the workshop aimed to empower teachers from Classes 6 to 10 across Uttarakhand to become "innovation champions" in their respective districts. This initiative was organized in collaboration with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Uttarakhand, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune.

Focused on STEM Education and Process Innovation

The workshop introduced participants to fundamental concepts such as STEM education, process innovation, and cascade training modules. The sessions emphasized a hands-on approach to inquiry and activity-based learning, equipping teachers with the skills necessary to foster creativity and critical thinking among their students.

Commitment to Educational Excellence

Naveen Kumar, Dean of Academic Affairs at IIT Roorkee, highlighted the institution's dedication to educational innovation, stating, “This workshop is a testament to our commitment to empowering educators with the tools and knowledge they need to inspire the next generation of innovators.” Harinath Chakrapani, Principal Investigator of iRISE at IISER Pune, praised the collaboration with IIT Roorkee, noting its crucial role in the workshop’s success. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, emphasized the institute’s mission to promote STEM education, reinforcing its role as a leader in educational and research excellence.

The workshop was attended by distinguished guests and faculty, including Professor Kaushik Ghosh, Coordinator of the Continuing Education Centre (CEC) at IIT Roorkee; Professor Ranjana Pathania from the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering; Krishnanand Bijalwan, Assistant Director at SCERT Uttarakhand; Avnish Uniyal, State Coordinator for INSPIRE MANAK; and Nitin Tiwane, Project Manager for iRISE.

  1. Strong placements: IIT Roorkee has achieved a 100% placement rate during MBA placement drive of 2023. Top companies like DE Shaw, Uber, Microsoft, Flipkart, Samsung Research, and IBM Research participate in campus recruitment.
  2. Good infrastructure: IITR has well-equipped labs, lecture halls, and hostels with modern facilities.
  3. Knowledgeable and helpful faculty members: The faculty members at IIT Roorkee are PhD holders and have vast experience. The faculty-student ratio is about 1:3 at IIT Roorkee which is among the best in the country.

Q:   Is IIT Roorkee good for BTech?
A:

By paying a total tuition fee amount of INR 8 lakh, students have the opportunity to score salary packages up to INR 27.94 LPA (the highest salary package during 2023 placements). Further, the average and median package offered during IIT Roorkee placement process of 2023 stood at INR 18.34 LPA and INR 18.09 LPA. In terms of ROI, the deal looks decent. In addition to this, the college ranks under the top 10 best institutes in the country for Engineering by NIRF 2022. Hence, BTech from IIT Roorkee is a good idea.

Q:   What are the trends of IIT Roorkee CSE programme?
A:

The cutoff trend for B.Tech at IIT Roorkee - Indian Institute of Technology has been decreasing in the recent years. In 2022, the closing rank for B.Tech. under general category for all India quota was 413. In 2023, it decreased to 412. Likewise, the cut off ranks have changed from 213 to 196 for OBC, 123 to 109 for SC, 60 to 61 for ST, 75 to 70 for EWS, 26 to 28 for PWD. This trend is likely to continue in the coming years, as the demand for engineering education in India continues to grow. Similar cut off trend can be seen for female candidates under all categories however the ranks are slightly different.
