Major Shift: JEE Main, NEET, CUET Could Begin in Class 11 and Twice a Year in April & November
An 11-member central panel meeting has reportedly discussed conducting JEE, NEET and CUET in class 11. Along with that, proposals have been made to conduct the exams twice a year in November and April. Check all details below.
According to a report by TOI, a central panel tasked with reducing students' dependence on coaching centres has discussed proposals to conduct major national-level entrance exams, such as JEE, NEET, and CUET, in class 11. Additionally, there have been discussions about conducting the entrance exams twice a year, in November and April. Currently, JEE Main is conducted biannually in January and April. NEET and CUET are held once a year.
The central panel also discussed restricting daily coaching hours to two to three hours.
Key Highlights of the 11 Member Committee Meeting Held on November 15
As per the report by TOI, the 11-member committee met on November 15, and the key highlights of the meeting were as follows:
- Proposals to hold major national-level entrance exams like JEE, NEET, and CUET in class 11 to ease academic stress on candidates that builds up in class 12.
- The committee has also discussed conducting the entrance exam twice a year in November and April.
- Coaching class timings to be regulated from two to three hours. Currently, students spend five to six hours at coaching centres.
- Also, there were discussions on a hybrid assessment model for the entrance exams. This includes weightage to both board marks and aptitude-based tests for the selection of students.
- As per the report, NCERT has been tasked with coordinating with CBSE and state boards to align their syllabus that is in line with the entrance exam syllabus. This aims to reduce disparities in the syllabus and that it is aligned with the syllabus of entrance exams.
Currently, NTA conducts JEE Main, NEET and CUET, which are major entrance exams for students transitioning from school to college. JEE Main is an important entrance exam for all engineering aspirants who want to have an engineering degree from IITs, NITs, IIITs and other major colleges of the nation. NEET is the only UG medical entrance exam, and CUET is now mandatory for admission to various state, private, and deemed universities.
Lakhs of candidates appear for these exams annually, and the competition is fierce. This year, it has been reported that JEE Main has received record registration with around 14.5 lakh candidates applying for the exam.
