Eight Indian Institutes of Technology are among the nine institutions from India in the top 500 universities in the world

There are eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) among the nine institutions from India in the top 500 universities in the world, thus reflecting the dominance of IITs. All the IITs have improved upon their ranking compared to the previous year’s rank in the QS World University Rankings 2023.

IIT Bombay is the second-best Indian institution, rising five places, followed by IIT Delhi (174th) which has risen eleven places, achieving its second-highest rank since the rankings’ inception.
Overall, the Institute has improved on its 2022 performance by 11 places in the QS World University Rankings 2023. Since 2014, IIT Delhi has moved up by 48 places in the QS World University Rankings.

IIT Bombay was the best-ranked institution from India for the past two years and this year it has secured 172 Rank with an overall score of 46.7 out of 100. The Institute has a score of 53.3 in academic reputation, 86.5 in employer reputation, 55.1 in citation per faculty, 25.8 in faculty-student ratio, 3.9 in international faculty and 1.6 in international students, all scores out of a maximum of 100 points. Among these six parameters, Employer Reputation indicated the strongest one for IIT Bombay with a rank of 59 globally.

The Director of the Institute Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri in his remark said, “While it is good to know that IIT Bombay has further improved in the international ranking, our collective effort in achieving excellence in teaching, research and industry outreach continues. I do see a good future ahead for IIT Bombay”.

Coming back to IIT Delhi, according to the QS WUR 2023, IIT Delhi stood amongst the top 12.2% of the global institutes as compared to 25.8% in 2014.

IIT Delhi has shown an improved performance with an overall score of 46.5 in QS WUR 2023 from its last year’s score of 45.9 overall. A noteworthy improvement was shown in the perception metrics as well with a score of 49 in Academic Reputation (45.8 last year) and Employer reputation 79.2 (70.8 last year). The rank in Academic Reputation and Employer Reputation improved by 12 and 23 positions respectively from the previous year.

Further, IIT Delhi has improved in the international faculty ratio metric with a score of 2.6 (1.2 last year). The median for Faculty-Student Ratio (Faculty Staff Per 100 students) stood at 8.9 which is above the global median of 7.9. The median for citation per faculty (normalized citation per faculty member) for IIT Delhi is 131.4 which is far above the global median of 43.3.

Two new unweighted metrics were introduced in QS WUR 2023 edition i.e., international research network and employment outcomes in which IIT Delhi scored 38.7 (global median 41.0) and 101.1 (global median 35.0) respectively.

While speaking about the IIT Delhi’s 174 rank globally in the QS World University Rankings 2023, Prof PV Rao, Dean, Planning and Head, Rankings, IIT Delhi, said, “During the last two years, IIT Delhi has improved its rank by 19 positions in QS WUR. Several new interdisciplinary academic programs and collaborative joint-degree programs with international universities have been initiated, which contributed to the improved performance in outcome-based QS WUR parameters”.

Globally, a total of 2462 institutions were analysed and 1422 were ranked. A total of 41 Indian institutes were ranked in the QS WUR 2023 edition among which there are 7 new entrants this year.

Another IIT which has improved upon its previous year’s rank is IIT Guwahati, which has climbed in ranking by 11 places. IIT Guwahati has received 384th rank in the world in the overall ranking and 37th World rank in Citations per Faculty.

Since 2014, IIT Guwahati has moved up at least 217 places from the 601-650 range in 2014 to 384th in 2023. In the 2023 edition, the institution has performed among the top 27% in the QS World University Rankings. At 37 globally with a score of 96.3%, the Citations per Faculty is the strongest indicator for IIT Guwahati.

Speaking about this performance, Prof T.G. Sitharam, Director of IIT Guwahati says, “A higher ranking in QS WUR for IIT Guwahati makes me very proud of our excellent faculty and students and their efforts to contribute towards top-quality research as well as other parameters. Their achievements are critical to our continued success in the global rankings. We will continue to focus on high-end research and make steady strides to go up the global rankings.”
