A student association based out of London has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking justice in the death of IIT Bombay student Darshan Solanki. Solanki died by jumping off his hostel building on February 12.
Sushant Singh Co-President of SOAS Student's Union, London has stated that he has written the letter after sleepless nights and suffocated days due to caste situations in India. “It is really hard for me to witness the death of my brothers & sisters (Rohit, Anitha, Payal…) list is endless. We want justice for #DarshanSolanki,” he wrote on Twitter.
In his letter to PM Modi he is writing this letter with deep concern over the recent case of Darshan Solanki, a student of IIT Mumbai, who took his own life due to caste discrimination. He writes: This tragic incident highlights the persistent problem of caste-based discrimination in our society and the urgent need for action to address it.”
Darshan Solanki, who was an 18-year-old first-year B.Tech student jumped from the seventh floor of his hostel building on Sunday afternoon. The student was a native of Ahmedabad and was pursuing B.Tech at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.
Solanki’s family suspects foul play in his death and said he faced discrimination as he was from a Scheduled Caste community. The Powai police are investigating the matter and have also visited Solanki’s home in Ahmedabad.
Students of IIT Bombay have called for a nationwide candlelight march today to demand justice for Darshan Solanki. On the other hand, IIT Bombay has formed a panel to conduct a probe into the death of Solanki amid allegations of caste bias and has urged its students to come forward if they have relevant information.
“As the President of the Student Union at SOAS, University of London, I have been advocating for the rights of Dalit students and fighting against caste-based discrimination in academic settings. The case of Darshan Solanki is a stark reminder that this issue is not limited to academic institutions but is prevalent throughout our society,” Sushant Singh writes.
He has also stated that it is crucial that steps are taken to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future. The government must take decisive action to eliminate caste-based discrimination and promote equal rights for all citizens, regardless of their caste or social background.
He has urged Prime Minister to take immediate action to address this issue, including implementing stronger legal measures to prevent discrimination, providing support for victims of discrimination, and increasing awareness and education to promote equality and inclusivity.
“As a nation, we cannot allow caste discrimination to continue to claim innocent lives. We must work together to create a society that is free from discrimination and where every individual is treated with respect and dignity,” writes Sushant Singh.
