Hijab Row: SC refuses urgent hearing, says will interfere at appropriate time

The Supreme Court today rejected the urgent hearing on the hijab row controversy and said that it will only interfere only at an appropriate time. Earlier, a girl student from Karnataka had approached the SC after High Court had directed to avoid wearing religious garments in educational institutions until the matter is resolved. The appeal has contended that the Karnataka high court has sought to curtail the fundamental right of Muslim students by not allowing them to wear the hijab.

SC Chief Justice NV Ramana said, "Don't spread these things to a national level. We will interfere only at an appropriate time," while declining an urgent hearing on the petition. When a lawyer pressed the court to take it up, arguing that the case had "far-reaching implications" and that students had been wearing the hijab or head scarf for 10 years, the Supreme Court remained firm.

The girl's petition had challenged the Karnataka High Court's remarks that educational institutions in the state can open for now but with no religious clothing on campus, for the sake of peace. The Karnataka High Court is hearing a petition challenging hijab restrictions in colleges. On Thursday, a three-member bench said it would resume the hearing on Monday; i.e. February 14, 2022.

On January 1, a government Pre-University college in Karnataka's Udupi barred six Muslim girl students from attending classes as they were wearing hijab. The college management cited a new uniform policy behind the reason for the ban. Soon after this, other government colleges in Udupi witnessed several students protesting against a ban on hijab.
