Nagaland University, the state’s sole central university, held its Seventh Convocation ceremony today at its Lumami Campus in Zunheboto, honoring the academic achievements of 6,683 graduates, postgraduates, and doctorate candidates from the university and its 76 affiliated colleges. The ceremony recognized 38 Gold Medallists and 30 PhD awardees for their outstanding academic accomplishments.

The event was graced by Chief Guest Shri La Ganesan, Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland and Chief Rector of Nagaland University, alongside Dr. Samudra Gupta Kashyap, Hon’ble Chancellor, and Prof. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, Vice Chancellor. Other dignitaries included Dr. Abemo, Registrar, and vice chancellors from Central University of Punjab and Central University of Gujarat.
In his address, Governor Ganesan congratulated the graduates, urging them to contribute to India’s vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. “India’s young population is our greatest asset. The road to a developed India calls for inclusive growth and sustainable development, and I see future entrepreneurs among you,” he said, emphasizing the opportunities driven by digital transformation and technological advancements.
Prof. Patnaik, presenting the Convocation report, highlighted the university’s progress in research and infrastructure. “Today is a defining moment for our graduates and Nagaland University. We are proud of their perseverance and our commitment to academic excellence,” he said, encouraging graduates to be agents of positive change.
Research and Innovation Milestones
Nagaland University reported significant achievements, including Rs. 6.67 crore in research grants from external funding agencies over the past two years and Rs. 1.57 crore in seed funding for young faculty. The university filed 170 national and international patents, with over 75 granted, and published over 1,000 Scopus-indexed research articles, books, and anthologies. Three faculty members were ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the Stanford Ranking.
Academic Advancements
With 6 Schools of Studies, 43 Departments, and 5 UGC-sponsored Centers, the university serves 26,585 students, including those at affiliated colleges. It has fully implemented the National Education Policy 2020, introducing a Four-Year Undergraduate Programme with multiple entry and exit options. A new Four-Year UG program in basic sciences was launched at the Multidisciplinary Research Centre at Lumami, strengthening STEM education in Nagaland.
