No Plan to Introduce Manusmriti or Baburnama in DU Syllabus: VC Yogesh Singh

On Monday, March 3, reports emerged that a proposal had been made to include Manusmriti and Tuzuk-e-Babri (Baburnama) in the History Honours syllabus for the seventh semester under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP)
Delhi University Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh has clarified that there is no plan to introduce Manusmriti or Baburnama in any course or study material at the university. He stated that such subjects are neither under consideration nor will they be included in the future.
"Baburnama is the autobiography of a tyrant. It has no relevance in the present time, and there is no need to teach it," Prof. Singh said. He emphasized that under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, DU is focusing on introducing new courses aligned with Indian traditions that will benefit the country and society. "We are working towards Viksit Bharat and designing study material that contributes to the vision of making India a developed nation by 2047," he added.
Reports of Manusmriti, Baburnama Inclusion in History Syllabus
On Monday, March 3, reports emerged that a proposal had been made to include Manusmriti and Tuzuk-e-Babri (Baburnama) in the History Honours syllabus for the seventh semester under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). A 15-member committee from DUโs History Department had prepared a draft syllabus for the core paper, Sources of Indian History, which included these texts along with Harshacharita, Matsyapurana, Sangam Kavya, and Sanskrit inscriptions from the Delhi Sultanate period.
Following protests by some students, who submitted a letter opposing the inclusion of Manusmriti and Baburnama, DU officials directed the committee to review the syllabus. The matter was to be presented before the Standing Committee and Academic Council, but a review has been ordered before further consideration.
Past Controversies
This is not the first time Manusmriti has sparked controversy at DU. Last year, it was included in a Law Faculty paper, leading to opposition from student and teacher groups. Following protests, Prof. Yogesh Singh had issued a statement advocating its removal.
