IIT Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia taken off FCRA list
Around 6,000Β organisationsΒ have been taken off the list of registeredΒ organisationsΒ under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) with effect from January 1, 2022.Β
Around 6,000Β organisations, including the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University, Indian Medical Association, Oxfam India and the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library,Β have been taken off the list of registeredΒ organisationsΒ under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) with effect from January 1, 2022.Β
Either theseΒ organisationsΒ did not apply for the FCRAΒ licenceΒ renewal or their applications were rejected by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).Β Β The MHA regulates the activities of the NGOs and associations registered under the FCRA. The registration is a must for any association and NGO to receive foreign funding.Β Β
An MHA official said the FCRAΒ licencesΒ of 18,778Β organisationsΒ were to expire between September 29, 2020, and December 31, 2021. Of these, 12,989Β organisationsΒ had applied for renewal. Since 5,789Β organisationsΒ did not apply for renewal of the FCRAΒ licence, they were deemed to have ceased to be registeredΒ organisationsΒ on January 1, 2022.Β
According to the FCRA website, among theΒ organisationsΒ whose registration ceased orΒ licenceΒ validity expired were the India Habitat Centre, Lady Shri Ram College for Women and Delhi College of Engineering, the Medical Council of India, Emmanuel Hospital Association, which runs over a dozen hospitals across India, the Tuberculosis Association of India and VishwaΒ Dharmayatan.Β
The Maharishi AyurvedaΒ Pratishthan, National Federation of Fishermenβs Cooperatives Ltd, Hamdard Education Society, Delhi School of Social Work Society, Bhartiya Parishad, DAV College Trust and Management Society, India Islamic Cultural Centre, Godrej Memorial Trust, The Delhi Public School Society, the Nuclear Science Centre at JNU and theΒ All India MarwariΒ Yuva Manch also figure on the list.Β
