Kerala schools to get sanitary pad vending machines

After declaring menstrual hygiene as a fundamental right for girls, the Kerala Government has decided to install sanitary napkin vending machines in all government schools across the state.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the project was aimed to break taboos, foster health and empower girls.

“The State Government has decided to install sanitary napkin vending machines in all schools across Kerala, reaffirming menstrual hygiene as a fundamental right for girls. This project aims to break taboos, foster health, and empower our girls to soar with confidence!,” the CM tweeted.

The state is actively promoting the use of menstrual cups, a sustainable menstrual product. In the last budget, state Finance Minister KN Balagopal had earmarked INR 10 crore to promote the use of menstrual cups.

The schools are scheduled to reopen on June 1. Around 47 lakh students will reportedly join public schools this year. The state-level school reopening festival 'Praveshanolsavam' will be inaugurated by the CM at Malayinkeezhu UP School, Thiruvananthapuram.

"The excise department has submitted a report on drug gangs targeting school children. Anti-drug campaigns focusing on kids will be carried out to create awareness," said the minister, as reported by Mathrubhumi.com.

Aided school teachers in Kerala have approached the Supreme Court highlighting their plight. They have alleged that a lack of coordination between government departments has led to the crisis. The approval of their appointment has been put on hold in the wake of the implementation of the differently able quota.
