NMC clarifies PGMER 2023 after IMA’s protest on MBBS-BAMS ‘mixopathy’, confirms IMA conferences valid for medical students’ research paper eligibility.

The recent controversy over the proposed MBBS-BAMS integrative course, often termed as “mixopathy”, has withnessed a new development. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a clarification to the Indian Medical Association (IMA), addressing concerns related to the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER) 2023.

NMC Clarification

In a letter to IMA President Dr. Mehul J. Shah, NMC Chairman Dr. Abhijat Sheth has explained that the amendment in PGMER 2023 is specialty-specific, not organization-specific. As per the letter, postgraduate students presenting research papers or posters in National or State IMA conferences—provided these are in their allotted specialty sessions—will be considered eligible for university examinations.

“If a student presents a research paper or poster publication in any National IMA/State IMA conference annually in their specialty allotted session, then they will be considered eligible for university examination,” reads the letter by Dr. Sheth.

IMA’s Earlier Objection on MBBS-BAMS ‘Mixopathy’

This clarification comes after the doctors association strongly opposed NMC’s plan for an integrative MBBS-BAMS course, calling it an “unscientific mix” of modern and traditional systems of medicine. The doctors’ body had warned against such “mixopathy,” saying it could dilute the standards of medical education and affect patient safety.

Relief for Medical Students

The NMC’s statement provides relief to thousands of medical students, who were concerned that only specific organizations’ conferences would be recognized. By confirming that IMA conferences remain valid platforms for research presentation, the Commission has removed uncertainty over exam eligibility under PGMER 2023.
