The Odisha government has decided to make a provision for reservation in engineering and medical colleges for all those students who will be passing out from the state-run schools. The government has also approved a proposal to make it mandatory for all the people's representatives and government servants to submit the property statements every year.
The details will be kept in the public domain for transparency, State Parliamentary Affairs Minister A K Arukha said. The proposals were approved by the cabinet during a meeting virtually chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

"The quota in engineering and medical colleges for students passing out from state-run schools will be introduced from the next academic year," School and Mass Education Minister S R Dash said.

With this reservation policy, the government main objective is to boost the morale of the students in the rural areas who are deprived of coaching and digital courses that are easily available in urban areas, which is why the students of rural schools are failing to compete with their urban counterparts, the minister said.

All those students who will be passing matriculation examinations from state-run schools will be eligible to avail the quota irrespective of their economic background, Dash said.

The cabinet approved the formation of a high-powered committee under the chairmanship of a retired Orissa High Court judge to formulate within three months the modalities for implementing the reservation.

A truly meritorious student doesn't require a quota in any category. Students should prepare to face the challenges of the competition through hard work and not through subsidized seats.

The decision of ODISHA govt to allocate quota in MBBS will bring down the quality of qualified doctors as well as the morale of students appearing in the general category. It's better not to victimize the future medical fraternity in the state with such erroneous decisions.

Allocation of quota in MBBS seats doesn't stand justified in the name of creating a balance in competition. The rationale to do so is itself illogical. Provision of Free coaching prior to the entrance examination and exemption from admission fees are the better options.
