COVID-19 Crisis: Amid the reopening of schools in Punjab with the declining cases of the novel coronavirus, the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Waring Khera village in Punjab’s Muktsar district has been shut down after 14 students tested positive for COVID-19. According to India Today, out of the total 14 students who have caught the infection, 12 are Class 8 students and the rest 2 are from Class 9. Considering that it is a boarding school, students have been kept in isolation and treatment will be provided in the school itself.

There is a fear that if the students are sent homes, they may spread novel coronavirus among the families. The report suggest that authorities have decided that in order to contain the virus spread, the children will be treated in the school itself. In view of the latest outbreak of the novel coronavirus cases, the school will remain closed for two weeks. Punjab started reopening schools in the state from August 2, 2021, citing a decline in the number of COVID-19 cases. However, the reopening took place with strict adherence to the guidelines laid down by the government against the COVID-19 spread.

In order to prevent the spread of the virus, school administration was directed to maintain a mandatory six-feet social distancing inside classrooms, wearing masks and using sanitizers were among the important guidelines.

The government also assigned duties to district education officers to ensure that teaching and non-teaching staff are fully vaccinated before they conduct any physical classes. Schools were also asked to keep the classrooms sanitized and follow COVID-19 safety protocols and guidelines as directed by the central and state governments.
