Postpone UPSC IAS Prelims 2020: Petition filed in Supreme Court

The candidates are demanding UPSC to postpone the IAS 2020 exam. The demand to postpone the IAS prelims 2020 now reaches the apex court of the country. The Supreme Court on September 24 issued a notice to the Union Government of India and the Union Public Service Commission. The civil service aspirants filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India regarding the postponement of IAS prelims 2020 exam in the wake of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and prevailing floods in various parts of the country.

The Supreme Court bench of Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice Sanjeev Khanna will hear the petition on September 28 as per the PTI reports. The candidates are demanding to postpone the IAS prelims 2020 exam by two-three months because of the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases and the floods in various parts of the country.
โConducting the aforesaid examination in India at such perilous time, is nothing else but putting lives of lakhs of young students (including Petitioners herein) at utmost risk and danger of disease and death,โ the plea stated, according to PTI.

Article 16 of the constitution of India says that โthere shall be equality of opportunity for all citizens in matters relating to employment or appointment to any office under the State.โ The contention behind this petition will be that in the prevailing conditions how a state can ensure equality of opportunity as enumerated in the constitution of India.
The plea further stated that since civil services exam is a recruitment examination, and there is no academic session attached to it, there would not be any delay or loss of any academic progress.

UPSC has increased the number of exam centres but did not increase the number of exam districts. The candidates demand that in a majority of cases, the candidate need to travel over three hundred kilometres to appear for the IAS prelims 2020 exam. There is a high probability of the candidates getting infected with the coronavirus while travelling by public transport for such a purpose.

Now the Union Government and the UPSC will file their reply to the petition and the next hearing is scheduled for September 28. In the past also, such petitions related to other exams did not result in affirmation from the highest court of the country.
