Madhya Pradesh Introduces Mandatory Test for Cross‑Stream PG Admissions
Eligible students will have to pass either CUET PG or state-level eligibility examination before being admitted to cross-stream PG programs for 2025–26 academic year.
In a significant policy shift announced by Madhya Pradesh’s Department of Higher Education (DHE) this week, undergraduate students looking to switch disciplines at the postgraduate (PG) level—for instance, BA/BCom graduates opting for MSc programs—must now clear an entrance test. Eligible students will have to pass either CUET PG 2025 or a new state-level eligibility examination before being admitted to cross-stream PG programs for the 2025–26 academic year.
Before, students could easily switch streams for higher studies, like from BA to MA or BSc to MSc, without any extra test. Now, this rule has changed. From now on, students must show they are ready for the subject before joining PG courses.
Tulsi Ram Dahayat, an officer at DHE, said this new rule starts immediately. Detailed instructions will soon be sent to state universities to plan and conduct these exams.
Undergraduates who planned to cross disciplines now face the task of preparing for CUET or the new eligibility test, under potentially tight timelines.
The requirement may delay admission cycles and academic calendars, as test dates and result declarations are compacted.
The shift reportedly responds to student demand and seeks to ensure that PG students possess the appropriate academic foundations in their chosen fields.
Broader Implications:
Commonly asked questions
For admission in Universities through CUET (PG)-2026, the existing policies regarding quota, category, relaxation, reservations, qualification, subject combinations, preferences etc. of the respective University shall be applicable.
As the eligibility criteria for admission may be unique for every University, the candidates are advised to visit the University website to which they are applying for their respective programs. Candidates are advised to satisfy themselves before applying that they possess the eligibility criteria laid down by the University they are applying to.
Mere appearance in the Entrance Test or securing pass marks at the test does not entitle a candidate to be considered for admission to the Programme unless he/she fulfils the Programme wise eligibility conditions of the University they are applying to.
Students can choose up to four subjects in the CUET PG 2026 exam. The choice of subjects would depend on the course studied in graduation and the universities opted for.
Universities and coaching centers will need to adjust modules and counseling schedules.
Aspirants must now plan for additional entrance tests even if they previously did not need to, influencing preparation and resource allocation.
