For BDes admissions, you have both options available: merit- and entrance based entry. Most of the top design institutes give admission on the basis of relevant entrance exam scores like NIFT Entrance Exam, NID DAT, UCEED, CUET, etc. along with PI and portfolio submission rounds. You will also find many design colleges that offer admission solely on the basis of Class 12 merit.
To be on the safer side you should always check the respective college website for their specific admission requirements for BDes courses.

VIT Vellore BDes eligibility criteria is to qualify Class 12 from the recognised board with 50% marks for general category. Students visit the official website.

Candidates who have passed Class 12 with a minimum of 40% aggregate are eligible to apply for BDes programme at VSURAJ. Aspirants must have documents proving their eligibility for verification at the time of admission. The selection for BDes is based on qualifying exam scores of the candidates.

Applications for NID DAT 2026 will open in September 2025 (tentatively). Candidates who have passed or will appear for higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examinations in the academic year 2025–26 in any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, Humanities etc.) from any recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or equivalent could apply.

The eligibility criteria for MAH B.Des CET is given below.
Must be an Indian national.
Passed 10+2 or equivalent exam with at least 45% (40% for reserved categories).

Yes, all candidates who have cleared Class 12 board exams are eligible to apply for BDes courses at INSD Kolkata. Candidates who have cleared Class 12 with Arts stream are also eligible to apply for this course.

A candidate is eligible to apply for FDDI's B.Des programmes if they have:
a) Passed 10+2 in any stream from a recognised board; or
b) Passed an examination recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as equivalent to 10+2 (Indian or foreign board); or
c) Passed the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) with at least five subjects.
