May be or may be not because last year closing rank was 31000 for Chennai main branch so you have to take part in the counselling.

I'll say VIT is a better option than SRM because VIT provides more exposure and better education when compared to SRM.
Moreover, placements are also good at VIT but for VIT, Vellore campus is most preferred.
If you compare VIT-Chennai, and SRM-Chennai then they are almost same but VIT is quite better than SRM.

You have a decent score, but you cannot get the SRM main campus as your rank will be lower, but you can get other campuses.
Since the exams have got over, the ranks and cut-offs will be released maybe on the 2nd of May. So, you can see which campuses you can get here:
