Madras Medical College dates back to 1664 when it was founded as the Government General Hospital to treat the sick soldiers of the East India Company. In 1857 it got Affiliated to University of Madras
Its Department of Geriatric Medicine was established in April 1978 by Dr. V. S. Natarajan MD with the aim of providing comprehensive health care to senior citizens. In 1986, a separate ward for geriatric medicine was started for acute care and rehabilitation. The department offers an MD geriatrics course under affiliation with the Tamil Nadu DR. M. G. R. Medical University, Chennai. The Medical Council of India has recognised the course since its inception. The department has been approved as a training center for training doctors in the field of geriatrics by WHO and is currently upgraded as a Regional Geriatric Center under NPHCE by the Government of India.

The admission to B.Sc. (Hons) degree course at Presidency University for different categories is strictly based on merit. The General Merit List (GMR) is prepared based on the academic score obtained by the students in Class 12. At the undergraduate level, Presidency University Kolkata offers a three-year B.Sc. (Hons) course across eight specialisations (subjects). Candidates can apply for a maximum of two subjects under this programme. The university accepts online applications for Indian students who have completed their Class 12. During the 2021 session, admission opened with the release of application forms in the month of August. Hence, for Presidency University Kolkata B.Sc. Aspirants seeking admission into this course should have passed Graduation in the relevant stream from a recognised university.
Admission to two-year postgraduate program offered by GNC is based upon the merit obtained in qualifying examination followed by personal interview. MBA selection will be through TANCET or CAT/XAT or any other MBA entrance test. For MCA, candidates have to appear for TANCET or any entrance test conducted by consortium of professional colleges in Tamil Nadu.
Those who have passed Bachelors Degree in relevant stream from a recognized university with 50% marks or above may apply for the admission in the program.
