Though the approximate outline for a German SOP is very similar to SOPs for other countries, there are a few minor differences. To begin with, German universities ask for letter of motivation, and not an SOP. They both mean the same document. Further, German institutions are more research oriented, and therefore, applicants are advised to elaborate more on their research experiences and aspirations. Additionally, overseas applicants are also expected to discuss what led them to choose Germany for their higher education, and if the same course is available in their home country, why did they choose to study it in Germany.

In an SOP for Computer Science in Germany, applicants should majorly focus on their relevant experiences with Computer Science. This means that they should mandatorily discuss what led them to study Computer Science in their Bachelor's, or despite being from another field, what piqued their interest in Computer Science. Generally, an SOP for computer Science in Germany should be around 1000 words or less. If there is no word limit specified, applicants may write up to 1.5 pages. The SOP should not be too wordy and must be focused on the applicant's academic and professional journey. Also, since different German universities may have different word limits for SOPs, it is wise to create an outline or checklist of important experiences or key achievements that you wish to add in each SOP.

An SOP for computer Science in Germany is typically more research-oriented and focused on the applicant's practical know-how, especially if it is for an MS program. Though SOPs for other countries also want to know about your hands-on experiences, German SOPs and LOMs need to be more concise. Further, if you are preparing an SOP for computer Science in Germany, be sure to document all your relevant experiences, especially research-oriented and practical experiences in your field. You can also talk about the latest advancements in the field of Computer Science, especially in Germany, which have inspired you to study there.
