The GATE syllabus for Civil Engineering will help students enhance their exam preparations and plan their studies accordingly. Topics covered in Civil Engineering are structural analysis, design of concrete and steel structures, soil mechanics, foundation engineering, hydraulic engineering, hydrology, wastewater treatment, and transportation planning. It also consists of essential topics like probability and statistics, linear algebra, calculus, numerical methods, and differential equations.

Section 1: Engineering Mathematics Linear Algebra: Matrix algebra; Systems of linear equations; Eigen values and Eigen vectors. Calculus: Functions of single variable; Limit, continuity and differentiability; Mean value theorems, local maxima and minima; Taylor series, etc. Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE): First order (linear and non-linear) equations; higher order linear equations with constant coefficients; Euler-Cauchy equations, etc. Partial Differential Equation (PDE): Fourier series; separation of variables; solutions of one-dimensional diffusion equation, etc. Probability and Statistics: Sampling theorems; Conditional probability; Descriptive statistics Mean, median, mode and standard deviation, etc. Numerical Methods: Error analysis. Numerical solutions of linear and non-linear algebraic equations; Newtons and Lagrange polynomials, etc.  

Section 2: Structural Engineering Mechanics: System of forces, free-body diagrams, equilibrium equations; Internal forces in structures; Frictions and its applications, etc. Solid Mechanics: Bending moment and shear force in statically determinate beams; Simple stress and strain relationships, etc. Structural Analysis: Statically determinate and indeterminate structures by force or energy methods; Method of superposition, etc. Construction Materials and Management: Construction Materials: Structural Steel Composition, material properties and behavior, etc. Concrete Structures: Working stress and Limit state design concepts, etc. Steel Structures: Working stress and Limit state design concepts; Design of tension and compression members, etc.  

Section 3: Geotechnical Engineering Soil Mechanics: Three-phase system and phase relationships, index properties; Unified and Indian standard soil classification system; Permeability, etc. Foundation Engineering: Sub-surface investigations - Drilling bore holes, sampling, plate load test, standard penetration and cone penetration tests; Earth pressure theories, etc.  

Section 4: Water Resources Engineering Fluid Mechanics: Properties of fluids, fluid statics; Continuity, momentum and energy equations and their applications, etc. Hydraulics: Forces on immersed bodies; Flow measurement in channels and pipes, etc. Hydrology: Hydrologic cycle, precipitation, evaporation, etc. Irrigation: Types of irrigation systems and methods; Crop water requirements, etc.  

Section 5: Environmental Engineering Water and Waste Water Quality and Treatment: Basics of water quality standards Physical, chemical and biological parameters; Water quality index, etc. Air Pollution: Types of pollutants, their sources and impacts, air pollution control, air quality standards, etc. Municipal Solid Wastes: Characteristics, generation, collection and transportation of solid wastes, etc.  

Section 6: Transportation Engineering Transportation Infrastructure: Geometric design of highways, etc. Geometric design of railway Track Speed and Cant. Concept of airport runway length, calculations and corrections; taxiway and exit taxiway design. Highway Pavements: Highway materials - desirable properties and tests; Desirable properties of bituminous paving mixes, etc. Traffic Engineering: Traffic studies on flow and speed, peak hour factor, accident study, statistical analysis of traffic data, etc.  

Section 7: Geomatics Engineering Principles of surveying; Errors and their adjustment; Maps - scale, coordinate system; Distance and angle measurement - Levelling and trigonometric levelling, etc. Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing - Scale, flying height; Basics of remote sensing and GIS. Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is one of the two new papers introduced in GATE and it comprises five sections namely Engineering Mathematics, Applied Mechanics and Structures, Fluid Mechanics and Marine Hydrodynamics, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and Thermodynamics and Marine Engineering.

Section 1: Engineering Mathematics Determinants and matrices, Systems of linear equations, Eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Functions, gradient, Linear, non-linear, first and higher order ordinary and partial differential equations, separation of variables. Laplace transformation, analytical functions of complex variables, Fourier series, numerical methods for differentiation and integration, complex analysis, probability and statistics, etc.  

Section 2: Applied Mechanics and Structures Engineering Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials, Vibrations, and Machine Design.  

Section 3: Fluid Mechanics and Marine Hydrodynamics Fluid Mechanics: Fluid properties; fluid statics, stability of floating bodies; Conservation laws: Mass, momentum and energy (Integral and differential form); Dimensional analysis and dynamic similarity; sources, sinks, doublets, line vortex and their superposition; Stokes integral theorem, etc. Boundary layer theory- Prandtl's boundary layer equations, criterion for separation, Blasius solution, Skin friction, displacement thickness, momentum thickness, etc. Vorticity and Kelvins theorem, Potential flow theory, Sources, Sinks and Doublets, hydrodynamic forces in potential flow, D'Alembert's paradox, etc.  

Section 4: Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Ship geometry and physical fundamentals - Archimedes principle, buoyancy and weight of ship, laws of flotation, heel and trim, stable and unstable equilibrium of ships, importance of streamlined hull shape, ship main particulars, hydrostatic calculations, etc. Stability and trim of Ships, Resistance and Propulsion, Ship Maneuvering and Motions, Ship Structures and Strength, Physical Oceanography, etc.  

Section 5: Thermodynamics and Marine Engineering Thermodynamics: First law of thermodynamics - Closed system undergoing a cycle; closed system undergoing a change of state; Internal energy of a system; Expansion work; Process using ideal gas - constant pressure, constant volume, isothermal, etc. Marine Diesel Engines, Marine Steam Turbines, Marine Boilers, Engine Dynamics, and Marine Auxiliary Machinery & Systems. The GATE Syllabus for Electrical Engineering  is divided into ten main sections. The main topics included in the syllabus are; 

Electric circuits, Engineering Mathematics, Electromagnetic Fields, Signals and Systems, Electrical Machines, Power Systems, Control Systems, Electrical and Electronic Measurements, Analog and Digital Electronics and Power Electronics.

Section 6: Power Systems Basic concepts of electrical power generation, ac and dc transmission concepts, Models and performance of transmission lines and cables, Economic Load Dispatch (with and without considering transmission losses), Series and shunt compensation, etc.  

Section 7: Control Systems Mathematical modelling and representation of systems, Feedback principle, transfer function, Block diagrams and Signal flow graphs, etc.  

Section 8: Electrical and Electronic Measurements Bridges and Potentiometers, Measurement of voltage, current, power, energy and power factor, etc.  

Section 9: Analog and Digital Electronics Simple diode circuits: clipping, clamping, rectifiers; Amplifiers: biasing, equivalent circuit and frequency response; oscillators and feedback amplifiers, etc.  

Section 10: Power Electronics Static V-I characteristics and firing/gating circuits for Thyristor, MOSFET, IGBT; DC to DC conversion: Buck, Boost and Buck-Boost Converters; Single and three-phase configuration of uncontrolled rectifiers, etc.

IISc Bangalore had released the GATE 2024 scorecard on 23 March 2024.Candidates can download their scorecard up to May 31 from the GATE 2024 official website. After May 31, candidates will need to pay INR 500 for downloading their scorecards. The facility to download GATE scorecard 2024 will be available up to December 31. 

Note that the GATE exam scorecard is valid for three years following the announcement of the results. Also, the admission counselling for M.Tech courses will be conducted by the COAP for courses offered by IITs, and the CCMT will conduct admission counselling for M.Tech programs offered by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and CFTIs.
