The IIT JAM tie-breaking procedures are essential for ensuring fairness and accuracy in the ranking of candidates. Here's why they are so important:

  • Maintaining Fairness:
    • When multiple candidates achieve identical scores, a system is needed to differentiate their ranks. Without a tie-breaking policy, it would be arbitrary to assign higher ranks.
    • The established criteria provide a transparent and objective method for resolving these situations.
  • Accurate Merit List Creation:
    • IIT JAM results in an All India Merit List, which determines who gets admission to prestigious programs at IITs and other institutions.
    • Accurate ranking is crucial for thi

According to information found on the official IIT JAM 2025 website, the tie-breaking criteria are as follows, in this order:

  • Lower negative marks.
  • NAT (Numerical Answer Type) marks.
  • MSQ (Multiple Select Question) marks.
  • score in 2 marks questions.
  • then score in 2 marks NAT.
  • If the tie still persists, the candidate's Date of Birth (DOB) is considered, with the older candidate receiving the higher rank.

Understanding the relationship between IIT JAM marks and ranks is crucial for candidates aiming for admission to prestigious institutions. Here's a concise overview:

  • General Trend:
    • Higher marks generally translate to better ranks. However, the precise correlation varies each year.
    • Factors like exam difficulty, the number of applicants, and overall performance influence the marks-to-rank ratio.

  • Key Considerations:
    • Top Ranks: Securing a rank within the top 100 often requires scoring above 75 marks. These high scores are essential for admission to top-tier IITs.

The tie-breaking criteria for awarding the ranks to candidates scoring the same aggregate marks in a Test Paper will be as follows:
Lower negative marks, followed by NAT marks, then MSQ marks, then score in 2 marks questions, and then score in 2 marks NAT. Subsequently, if there is a tie, then DOB would be used, where, the older candidate gets better rank.
For each Test Paper, an All India Merit List will be prepared based on AIR. The number of candidates included in the All India Merit List will depend on the total number of seats available in each category (GEN/ OBC-NCL/ EWS/ SC/ ST/ PwD) in a given subject. These candidates (hencefort

With a preparatory rank of 24 in the ST category for JEE Advanced, you have an excellent possibility of getting into the preparatory course of an IIT. These courses are for one year and are specifically meant for SC, ST, and PwD applicants who failed to qualify for the conventional cutoffs, with the hope of preparing them for the complete undergraduate course. On successful completion, you become eligible for admission to the B.Tech program, but the branch alloted would be subject to seat availability and your performance in the preparatory course. Generally, branches with available seats from the last intake are offered. For precise i

With an ST category JEE Main rank of 5000+ and a JEE Advanced prep rank of 2000+, the possibilities of getting a seat in a top IIT or NIT are subject to cutoffs, seat availability, and branch choice. Admission to IITs is competitive, but new IITs such as IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Jodhpur, or IIT Dhanbad can be accessed for some branches. NITs such as NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, or NIT Surathkal might be possible for branches like Civil or Metallurgy. Verify JoSAA cutoffs and attend counseling rounds for better opportunities. Use branch vs. institute preference while choosing.

Having a rank of more than 2000 in the ST category in JEE Advanced may prevent admission to the more popular streams in top IITs. But you still hold a possibility of getting admission into another branch or newer IITs. Admission cutoffs change every year depending on variables such as the number of applicants, seats, and difficulty in exams. One would do well to visit the original Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) website for up-to-date, in-depth cutoff details.

The JoSAA counselling is expected to start in the first week of June 2026. Usually, the JoSAA counselling registration starts a day after the JEE Advanced result is declared. The official website for JoSAA is josaa.nic.in.
