The Tamil Nadu government introduced a 7.5% horizontal reservation for students who studied from Class 6 to Class 12 in Tamil Nadu government schools. This applies across all categories; a portion of seats within each category's quota is reserved exclusively for government school students.

This is a major benefit: a government school student with a slightly lower cutoff score can still secure admission to top colleges that would otherwise require a much higher rank under open competition. This reservation applies to all government and aided colleges participating in TNEA counselling.

TNEA has domicile-based eligibility. You are eligible if you or your parents are Tamil Nadu residents, you studied in a TN school for a specified period, or your parents are central/state government employees posted in Tamil Nadu. Children of Central Government Employees are eligible regardless of home state if their parents have worked in TN for the past 5 years.

Pure out-of-state students who don't meet any eligibility conditions cannot participate in TNEA.
