"Form Follows Function" is a common approach to designing a building. It means that, the form of a building should be a natural outcome of the building's function. Architect Louis Sullivan once famously said “form ever follows function” to denote that in architecture and interior design the form or look of a space is secondary to its practical functionality.
For example, think of a sports stadium. The function is to allow many spectators to watch a sporting event. The form then has a big open area in the middle, with seats surrounding it in a step-like fashion. All stadiums have this basic form because of their function. The concept can also be more subtle though.

It definitely is Masters in Planning and architeture, Interior design is ubiquitous these days, every second person is pursuing this course and there are many small institutes and colleges that has opened up and hence less demands as more and more interior designers are coming up opportunities are getting less, while Maters in town planning or Urban Designing is a fresh field, hence the no. of job opportunities are more and hence wider career growth. So, i would definitely suggest you to go for Masters in town planning than interior designing. In order to purtsue this course there are very few good colleges like NID,sushant school of architecture Gurgaon, UPES school of Design and Studies, CCA that offers these kind of courses. Placement wise UPES and CCA is one of the best so all the best for your future.

The main aim of design schools is to prepare the students with the technical knowledge, artistic awareness, innovativeness and attitude that are necessary for this occupation. Interior Designers, a profession that combines creativity, technical knowledge, and business skills. Interior designers work with clients and other design professionals to develop design solutions that are safe, functional, attractive, and meet the needs of the people using the space.
Some of the main Principle that all interior designers abide by are:
Balance- The human body is symmetrical and as a result we naturally feel more comfortable in balanced settings.
Focal point-It is very effective to have a single item in a room which draws attention.
Unity and Harmony-Designers envision the space in totality in order to design different rooms in relation to each other.
Rhythm-It is important to keep track of the visual pattern repetition in a space, either to keep it consistent or to break the pattern.
Details-It is the finishing touches that complete a space and make it right.
Functionality-It is important to know and understand what the space will be used in order to design effectively and non-invasive.
Sustainability-Sustainability could refer to the capacity or ability of something to be maintained and remain intact for long periods before wear and tear.
Traffic Flow-The layout of a space needs to take movement into consideration. Furniture and decorations need to allow flow in the room.
Lighting & ventilation-Spaces need to include and use as much natural light as possible also natural ventilation is always preferred.

Kanchi, let me tell you about the field of design. Design is a field that is age old and has been evolving every year like science. Sometimes student Artists are too much enamoured by Fine Arts preventing them to look objectively at Design. They must read this http://bit.ly/SXc9GD. Again like science it pays to be at the cutting edge. For e.g. science students do better if they go for CS or IT since that are areas where development is taking place rapidly. Interiors, textile as well as Web Design rely on the same skills - your layout skills and color sense. A little higher perches Graphic Design, Fashion Design, jewellery design, Acting, & Fine Arts which rely on one of your artistic skills - sketching & imagination. At a similar level perches VFX as well as Motion Graphics which rely on one of your artistic skills - Cinematographic skills & imagination. Then come careers like Animation, Film Making, Game Design which rely on multiple talents like your authority over sketching, acting, direction, voice, sound, writing, storytelling and problem solving skills etc. Any extra skill can be used in this. So it turns out to be one of the most challenging as well as satisfying careers. Do remember that digital design careers (e.g. web design, graphics, UI design, animation, vfx, multimedia) give better profits since they can be delivered anywhere in the world & hence may earn in dollars - resulting in better rewards for designers.
