The period of training for MD course is three completed years including the examinations period at JIPMER Puducherry. However, for the students with a two-year PG Diploma in the same subject, the period of training shall be two years. Moreover, the institute's training procedure is designed involves learning experience for candidates around the needs of the community.

For admission to MD at JIPMER, candidate should have a valid MBBS degree recognised by the Medical Council of India/Dental Council of India with at least 55% aggregate for General and OBC category candidates and at least 50% aggregate for case SC/ST category candidates. Candidate must hold the degree and mark sheets as well during the form filling and admission confirmation.

JIPMER is ranked five among the top medicine colleges in India in the NIRF rankings 2024. Thus, it is a good institute for medical students. During the three years of the course, 10 months are of peripheral posting and remaining 26 months include ward duties. The institute has designed the course and curriculum that prepare the graduate to handle any challenges at work. As per the NIRF 2024 report of JIPMER Puducherry, the median package offered to PG 3-year candidates stood at INR 24 LPA.
