Usually, it's BA Sociology/BA (Hons) Sociology or BA in a similar field from a recognised university. Securing a minimum of 55% aggregate is also important. There is no upper age limit for the programme. The MA in Sociology discusses the evolution of society and the issues it has faced since ancient times.

Admission to this PG-level course is through a Centralised Allotment Process (CAP). For selection, candidates have to take the MGU CAT exam, which is conducted in-house. Based on the candidates' score in the entrance examination, a selection list is released by the university. Candidates who make it to the list become eligible for participation in the counselling round. The seats are allotted after document verification during counselling.

Moreover, its affiliated colleges accept other entrance exam scores as well. The accepted exam list include CPGET/MAT/CAT/CMAT/KMAT Kerala/Kerala University Admission.
