Hi Jagdish Manocha,
If your son secures very good grades and interested in research he can apply for a MS in mechanical engineering. He can also apply for specialized Masters that is MS in robotics, MS in transport design, MS in manufacturing design, MS in automation, MS in mechatronics, MS in automobiles and many more. He should choose a course which he thinks is best suited to his interests and career plans. Check this link too:

The answer will depend on many factors for example which university in India are you referring to. If you get through IIT you need not think of going someplace else I believe. IIT is world famous. However, when it comes to research work, research labs, faculty, infrastructure, global exposure then Germany is what I would prefer. TU Berlin, TU Munich etc. are some of the famous universities in Germany.
