Sailors has following options to become commissioned officer:
(a) Branch commission: Sailors are eligible to become branch commission officer once they reach to JCO rank.
(b) If sailor has educational qualification to become a Naval Officer, they can appear in open examination to become officer.

Mechanical Engineering graduates can undergo 1 year duration Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course to enter into merchant navy as Marine engineer. This course is offered by lot of institutes approved by the Directorate General of Shipping.

The Indian Maritime University is a Central University, that was established by Government of India for imparting quality education in the maritime field. It has an All-India jurisdiction and the headquarters is in Chennai. It has campuses at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Cochin. University conducts degree and post graduate courses in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Ship building and International Transportation and Logistics Management. A lot of private colleges are affiliated to IMU. IMU conducts its own entrance namely All India Common Entrance Test. You may appear in CET to pursue your merchant navy career.

You can join IMU or any engineering college offering marine engineering course to become a marine engineer or you can join as a deck cadet course in a reputed institute to become a navigation officer.
