Most advisors recommend starting the GIC process at least 1 to 2 months before you plan to submit your study permit application. This is to leave room for bank processing delays

An initial lump sum (roughly CAD $2,000-$4,000) is released when you activate your account in person - followed by monthly instalments for the rest of the year, plus the interest your GIC earned.

No. Since the Student Direct Stream ended in 2024, all Indian applicants go through the regular stream - where a GIC is one of several accepted proof-of-funds documents - but not a mandatory one.

Yes, UC San Diego is quite expensive, although the total annual cost of attendance depends heavily on residency and housing choice

For International UG students, the total costs range between USD 78,000 and USD 80,000 (INR 74.3L and INR 76.24L).

The base UCSD tuition fee is USD 16K to 19K (INR 15.2L to INR 18.1L) for all students.

Yes, the University of California, San Diego is a top 20 university for Indian students. As per the Shanghai Rankings 2025, UCSD ranks #20 globally and it is #4 among the top US public universities. 

It is also known as a public Ivy and known for subjects like Biological Sciences and Computer Science (ranks among the global top 15).

Yes, on-campus housing is guranteed for Indian students who satisfy any of the conditions below:

  • An PG student, home or overseas, who has accepted admission and applied for housing on or before Jun 30
  • An UG or Foundation student, home or overseas, who accepted an admission offer and applied for housing on or before Jun 30

*There's no guarantee all types of rooms will be available, so interested students are advised to apply as soon as possible via the Uni of Roehampton Accommodation portal.
