November 6, 2019: Looking at the need for achieving excellence and rising higher in the global rankings, Vice-Chancellor of O P Jindal Global University, Raj Kumar presented a 10-point agenda to build institutions of eminence, capable of connecting the local needs with global aspirations. JGU is the only university in the category of non-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and non-medicine universities to be recognised as ‘Institution of Excellence’.
To achieve this goal, there is a need to create multidisciplinary universities and to provide the faculty with adequate resources in order to conduct a cross-disciplinary study — one that encourages innovativeness, remains socially important and responds to the nation's needs.
In addition to recruiting eminent professors both from the country and overseas, Kumar also highlighted the need for transparent admission process without management quota, and establishing international networks and partnerships with leading foreign universities. The idea is to foster diversity, inclusion and connectivity.
Jindal Global University accorded Institute of Eminence status
August 3, 2019: The Union government has granted the title of ‘Institution of Excellence’ to another 14 higher educational institutes. This includes Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Shiv Nadar University and O.P Jindal Global University. The transition offers greater scientific, institutional and financial flexibility for these institutions. While private institutions have the autonomy, public institutes will also be supported by Rs 1,000 crore each for a period of five years to enhance their growth and improve their ranking in India.
