11 Massive Online Open Courses launched by IGNOU; 44 more expected soon
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), one of the esteemed institutions offering distance education courses, is all set to try its hands in the field of digital education, and for the same it has launched 11 free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC).
What is MOOC?
Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a system that provides free scholastic courses using web as the medium. Candidates enrolled in MOOCs get to learn a plethora of courses and skills, but this does not qualify as formal education.
MOOCs launched by IGNOU
The Minister of State HRD, Mahendra Nath Pandey made this announcement at the University’s 30th convocation ceremony. Putting light on the introduction of these courses, M N Pandey said that the focus of the University is to exploring the field of digital education and expand its reach within the education system.
Adding on to the information he said that IGNOU has been given the channels of 'Swayam' and 'Swayamprabha' by MHRD with the purpose of bringing transformation in the country’s higher education. Under the 'Swayamprabha' there are 32 direct-to-home (DTH) educational channels that were launched by the MHRD last year with an intention of broadcasting educational programmes for the students of schools and Universities. The content of the programmes broadcasted on these channels is mainly prepared by IIT professors and subject matter experts.
As reported by a leading daily, “The University is already working on Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). Our expectation from the university shall be to extend its students horizon towards digital education through new technology, communication mediums, electronic mediums and devices.”
The total number of courses launched right now are 11, and out of these, the already functional courses are two certificate courses in Russian and e-learning. The rest of the nine courses will be rolled out by the University by the end of the month. Apart from this, the University has 44 more MOOCs in the pipeline for the next three months.
