COVID-19 Impact: In order to give some relief to the students amid the ongoing stressful pandemic situation, the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kanpur declared its decision to remove ‘fail grade’ for graduating students and also offered a waiver of courses. According to the reports, IIT Kanpur decided to take these measures considering the devastating second wave of the novel coronavirus. Announcing the same, IIT Kanpur Director Abhay Karandikar took to Twitter and expressed his hope that the measures would help alleviate some anxiety of the students.

Taking to Twitter, Professor Karandikar shared that the academic senate of IIT Kanpur has announced several measures such as waiver for lab courses that were not offered in either of the semesters conducted in 2020-21. Also, the courses would not be offered in summer 2021 and students can apply for the waiver.

The technology institute also offered a waiver of additional 18 credits (2 courses) for any course type in addition to the waiver of lab courses to the students who are graduating this year. There will be no ‘fail grade’ for students – however, the instructor can de-register students on case to case basis. As for other semester students, there would be no termination from the undergraduate academic programs at the end of 2020-21 on the basis of academic performance.

In order to continue the teaching-learning process, the institute will continue the online classes in the midst of the pandemic. With the lockdown lifting temporarily last September, only a few students and research scholars were permitted to return to the campuses. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education on April 3, directed all centrally-funded institutions and universities including IITs, NITs and IIITs to defer all offline exams for now. However, online exams are allowed to be conducted as per the schedule.
