This is a myth that has surely restricted parents from enrolling their children in Design courses. It is well-understood that design is truly of paramount importance to any industry today. However, there is a huge demand for designers in India and the world over. An article in TOI states that India has a demand for approximately 62,000 designers, of which only 7000 are professionally qualified. Such a deficit of Designers in the Industry has compelled the need to produce professionally qualified designers. This only states that the reality is quite the opposite. Myth: No formal education is needed for Design
There was a time in the past when there was a lack of awareness when it came to Design Education. Institutes offering Design were very few. It was only in 1961 that the National Institute of Design (NID) came into existence. For many decades that followed people found it difficult to get accustomed to the idea of a B.Des Degree in Design. Certificate courses and short-term diplomas hold no value in the design industry. Today, the business landscape has changed and needs talent with specific skills that cater to their clear-cut needs. Numerous courses/specializations are offered in a typical B.Des. (Hons.) Degrees range from Web Design, Textile Design, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Product Design, Interior Design, Communication Design, Jewellery Design, and the list goes on. The needs of the market are specific and hence formal education in design is a MUST.
Myth: Design is only a Hobby/Passion
Many consider Design as an add-on subject or a creative passion that can be pursued as a hobby. You might also find people saying that a degree in design is not of much value since it doesn’t promise a well-paying career path. Such myths have stopped passionate students and professionals from pursuing their passion for design. According to google the design Industry is growing at an annual rate of 25%. This goes to day the top corporates are leveraging innovative goal-oriented design strategies that will boost their business. According to the India Design Report by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, 87% of Designers in India contribute to Graphic Design while 89% of Employed Designers contribute to Industrial and automotive design and 35% of Designers contribute to fashion and textile. People are actively contributing to the design market today. Design means pure business, gone are the days when people considered it a side-track career option or a hobby.
Design Is ONLY About Aesthetics, Art and Color
Design seeks a fair understanding of aesthetics, art and color. But, It’s so much more! Design today is about solving crucial market problems that seek innovative solutions. You think of a product and your mind instantly recalls the visual and design aesthetics behind it. The role design plays in deciding the success of a business is exceptional. The creative zest to curate out-of-the-box solutions is a much-appreciated trait in the Design Industry. From a Product Designer designing consumer-savvy products to an Industrial Designer merging art, business, and tech to provide solutions, all of these are done by a Designer who is well-trained with the right skill set.
