Most people, when asked about sports psychologists, might imagine a scene from a movie - a coach raising morale for a team that is behind by delivering an inspiring pep talk and urging them to believe in themselves. The team gets fired up and pulls out all stops to bring home the trophy.

While motivation is indeed an integral part of performing at the highest level, sports psychologists have many more tools at their disposal to ensure that an athlete is able to perform consistently under pressure, rather than relying on sporadic bursts of motivation. With the rise of elite sport in India and globally, along with growing awareness around mental health, sports psychologists are now more than ever an integral part of the athlete support staff.

This is why the M.A. in Applied Psychology, Sports Psychology specialisation at Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS), O.P. Jindal Global University is positioned to cater to the growing demand.

At the current stage, India stands at the precipice. There is growing viewership, sponsors are investing more into advertisements, and there is an explosion of leagues and tournaments. Sports science is coming into its own, but psychological infrastructure is still playing catch-up. As a budding sports psychologist, there are several paths to explore.

One of the most visible is working with athletes and sports teams. Professional leagues like IPL, ISL, Pro Kabaddi, and even some emerging university-level competitions are slowly integrating mental training. They are on the lookout for individuals who specialise in team dynamics, mental conditioning, performance enhancement, and related areas.

These roles are often relationship-driven, which means those who build credibility and forge connections through internships and field exposure gain an advantage. Programmes that place real-world training at the heart enable students to hit the ground running.

Another significant pathway lies in youth development. With India’s vast talent pool, there are many who could be the next Virat Kohli, Sania Mirza, or Neeraj Chopra if given the correct guidance and training at an early stage.

There are thousands of academies producing athletes, but almost none have the structured psychological support needed for youth to truly blossom. Parents and coaches are increasingly aware of this gap and are actively seeking individuals who can address it. While this work may not appear glamorous, it is scalable, impactful, and, in practical terms, less saturated.

Rehabilitation and injury psychology is another critical yet often overlooked area. Athletes do not just need to recover physically; they frequently deal with fear, identity loss, and performance anxiety after injury. This represents a major blind spot in the system. If you have knowledge of emotional regulation during rehabilitation, injury recovery psychology, and are trained to address performance anxiety, you become an invaluable asset to sports medicine clinics, physiotherapy centres, and team coaching setups. It is therefore essential to choose programmes that include these aspects in their curriculum.

Looking beyond India, the global landscape presents a more structured and institutionalised approach. Sports psychology abroad is often governed by professional sporting bodies across Olympic programmes, national training systems, and elite leagues.

To practice, one typically requires certification and licencing from accredited bodies such as the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), British Psychological Society (BPS), or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), depending on the country. The work itself is interdisciplinary, involving collaboration with strength and conditioning coaches, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and performance analysts. This makes it essential to have a foundation rooted in applied learning and rigorous field training, rather than purely theoretical understanding.

At the same time, research and academia are expanding rapidly within sports psychology. Areas such as performance analytics, the neuropsychology of athletes, and mental health in elite sport are receiving increased attention. Universities and high-performance institutes are investing heavily in understanding how psychological variables influence consistency, recovery, and peak performance. For those inclined toward academic pursuits, it becomes important to choose programmes that open pathways into PhD opportunities, university teaching, and applied research labs.

An emerging domain that is gaining serious momentum is esports. In 2025 and 2026 alone, global esports viewership has crossed 640–650 million, with projections pushing it closer to 700 million in the coming years. This growth brings larger prize pools, sponsorship deals, and structured leagues, making esports a viable career pathway not just for athletes but also for supporting professionals like coaches, analysts, and psychologists.

Alongside the challenges seen in traditional sports, esports athletes face unique issues such as cognitive fatigue, extreme reaction-time pressures, irregular sleep cycles, and burnout from hyper-competitive environments. Many of these challenges are still being understood, which creates space for new-age sports psychologists to carve out their own niche.

Against this backdrop, it becomes clear that not all degrees are equal. When choosing a programme, it is important to focus on what you want to learn and how you want to apply it.

The M.A. in Applied Psychology, Sports Psychology specialisation at JIBS, O.P. Jindal Global University is designed with a strong emphasis on applied training. It includes areas such as mental conditioning, team dynamics and leadership, performance enhancement and intervention strategies, and injury and rehabilitation psychology, along with real-world internships and practicum exposure. This makes it a strong pathway for those who want not just theoretical knowledge, but the ability to apply it in real-time and see tangible improvements.
