- Based on Academics (Class 10/ Class 12/ Graduation): While a student with average scores in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation with a good CAT score certainly has good chances of getting a call from IIM-A, chances are less for someone with an average CAT score.
- Based on student category (General or Reserved): While it is tough for a General category average student to grab a seat at IIM due to high score requirements, a reserved category student can get admission being at average scores as well.

Common Admission Test or CAT is a national-level management aptitude test conducted by IIM for admission to MBA. Yes, it is difficult to get admission in IIM Bangalore. With it being one of the top IIMs, the admission chances are very slim. Only those who clear the high cutoff can get a seat in flagship PGP programme. Students have to clear not only the cutoff, but also the selection rounds to get admission. But with the right planning and practice, students can join the institute.
No matter how much a student secures in Class 12, IIM Bangalore, while shortlisting candidates for MBA follows a normalization process and gives weightage to all exam scores, i.e., Class 10, Class 12 or graduation. The process of normalisation is explained below:
- For IIM Bangalore PGP admission, a shortlist will be prepared comprising the names of candidates who have secured a pre-determined minimum score on all sections of CAT.
- All the subsequent processing, standardization and selection are limited to candidates selected to the first short list alone. Therefore, the CAT score alone is used as the basis for arriving at the first short list
- For all candidates in the first shortlist, a candidate’s percentage scores in the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams are adjusted by dividing each such score by the 90th percentile score obtained in that board. For this purpose, the database of Class 10 and Class 12 scores of all CAT applicants of the past two years is used for identifying the 90th percentile score for each Class 10 and Class 12 scores board.
