Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   Can an average student get into an IIM?
A:

The answer to this question of whether an average student can get into IIM can be both yes and no depending on the definition of an average student.

  • Based on Academics (Class 10/ Class 12/ Graduation): While a student with average scores in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation with a good CAT score certainly has good chances of getting a call from IIM-A, chances are less for someone with an average CAT score.
  • Based on student category (General or Reserved): While it is tough for a General category average student to grab a seat at IIM due to high score requirements, a reserved category student can get admission being at average scores as well.
  • Based on past work experience, diversity and other factors: Gender and academic diversity is also a factor on which students are shortlisted at IIM. IIMs judge the past academic category based on the degree obtained by the students before MBA and then a weightage is allotted based on that. For Engineers, the percentage for scoring the highest marks is higher as compared with other streams
  • Performance in selection rounds: Once you make it to the final selection rounds, i.e., AWT/PI process, it can be considered a fresh start. At this stage, students can forget their past average-ness but definitely require good grasp over the past subjects as academics-related questions are asked in the interview.

Based on the above factors, it can be considered that while getting into top Management institutes, such as IIM is extremely tough, the past performance, CAT performance, student category and a lot of factors can be the reasons for a student to receive that final call.

Absolutely satisfied with college.
Placements: Almost all students were placed in our course. Placement was extremely good. Highest salary package offered in our course was in crores. Average salary package was around 20 LPA. Top recruiting companies were JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, D.E. Shaw, etc. Almost all students successfully secured internship offers.
Infrastructure: Facilities and infrastructure available for our course were extremely good. It provided world-class facilities. Library was available with a quality of reference books. The facilities in the hostel were also really good, like 5 5-star hotel. A large sports court was also present.
Faculty: Teachers were helpful, qualified, and knowledgeable. Teaching quality of our faculty members was really great. Many of them were alumni of foreign universities like Stanford and Harvard. Course curriculum was relevant. Semester examination was quite tough.

My review about this college.
Placements: Internships are a very vital ingredients of IIM-C life. These internships are to be taken in the passage between first year-end and second-year start. The B-school records 100% summer internship placement with reasonable pay. Summer placements happen in October and final placements happen in March. The average compensation is around Rs 28 LPA. All students are placed in firms like Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, ITC, HUL, Microsoft, Infosys, ICICI, Wipro, Satyam, Cognizant, Bank of America, Indus Valley Partners, Marico, Dabur, British Gas, Temasek Holding, and many more.
Infrastructure: Faculty members put their best foot forward to ensure a great classroom learning experience for all. The institute provides accommodation facilities. Hostel fees are not included in the total fees of Rs 21,00,000. There are commonly changing rooms and games rooms where students can chill and gossip. With co-ed hostels also in place, it is more fun chilling and cracking jokes. The surroundings are amazing, and we used to celebrate even the festivals in the hostel.
Faculty: Faculty members at IIM Calcutta are top-notch. They also have very huge research works, papers, and experiences that are world-class. Most of them have graduated from the esteemed business schools of India. The finance, operations, and organizational behavior professors are best in India. All the courses in the first 2 semesters are related to the basic understanding of the business ecosystem. Basics of marketing, finance, organizational behavior, and political history of India are covered initially. Later in the second year, we can choose our own subjects and major in any division. IIMC has a faculty to student ratio of around 1:7 which is slightly lower as compared to its counterparts but nonetheless.

It is the most appropriate college in Calcutta for the MBA course.
Placements: In the pre-final year, students are arranged with some paid or unpaid internships across various corporate industries with the help of alumni of the college. Top trainers and alumni provide proper training in approaching companies for getting placed. Many students got placed in the banking sector with a package of above 4.3 LPA.
Infrastructure: Other than the uniform days, all girls and boys are required to dress formally, and it is usually monitored by the in-charge. It's a digitalised college but refuses to use mobile phones on campus.
Faculty: It's very obvious that this course requires fewer books for studying, while we are required to buy the same from the college itself instead of using library books. It is so much easier to score in the semester when we read only the important questions. The teaching quality of teachers is not so impressive or satisfying. Apart from all, scores are the deciding factors of a student's performance.

IIM Calcutta College review.
Placements: About 99% of students got placed from my course. The lowest package is approximately 9 LPA-10 LPA. The average package is 30 LPA and the highest package is 80 LPA. The top recruiting companies are Capgemini, Wipro, and Infosys. Most students got internships in several companies.
Infrastructure: The college facilities like Wi-Fi in classrooms, huge central library, and all sports facilities for both indoor and outdoor are available on the campus and it is satisfactory. Hostel and mess are of average quality and acceptable. Overall, the infrastructure is very good, and it is value for money. Satisfied by the looks of this campus.
Faculty: Here in IIM Calcutta faculty members are the best since most of them are in college for many years and highly experienced in their fields. Their knowledge is high regarding the current situations of the market and industries. Some of them have good contacts with industries. The course curriculum is well accurately designed by board members which is good. Hence, we have no difficulty regarding the curriculum, so overall good.

Stable results in placement and academic performance.
Placements: I got placed in the company Goldman Sachs. Nearly 40+ student competitors fought with me to grab this opportunity, while 15+ students cleared the first round and 5+ students cleared the second round. In the final interview, I was one of the persons selected for the reputed company with a package of 6.46 LPA.
Infrastructure: The layout of the college was so amazing, and they are offering several courses at very low fees. Cameras are fixed at every main location of the campus, so unnecessary student behavior and movements in the campus area are not highly encouraged at any time.
Faculty: For pricing academic standards, the top 3 performers in academics are rewarded with scholarships that cover their tuition fees. This really helps students from economically weaker backgrounds and motivates us to study better than before.
