September 18, 2023: Amruta Mali and Poonam Patil, final year B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture students of the School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Shirpur, have emerged as bright stars at the SmartIdeathon Competition, conducted at GITAM University Hyderabad. This prominent event, which drew participants from universities and institutes across the country, was organised in partnership with Startup India, IIC, the Ministry of Education, the Government of India, and Northeastern University, Boston, USA.
During the competition, Amruta and Poonam, the founders of Agro-India, an initiative under SVKM's NMIMS - School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Shirpur, demonstrated their commendable innovation. They demonstrated a board game that has evolved into a detailed simulation of the agricultural environment. This game depicts the complexities of crop management, resource allocation, and market dynamics in a fun and informative way. The duo advanced to the final phases of the SmartIdeathon Competition, a 'Student pitching competition,' winning a coveted position among the Top 8 Finalists from participants across the country.
The competition drew competitors from various disciplines of study and proved the power of ideas and their capacity to bring about significant change in industry. The students' enthusiasm for agriculture and strategic thinking resulted in the creation of an idea that integrated these two elements into an agriculture-based board game. The process included fine-tuning the game mechanics, constructing the board, and devising challenges that put their invention and creativity to the test. Reaching the top 8 is not only a personal achievement for the two students, but it also validates the innumerable hours they spent brainstorming, designing, and perfecting the game. It says volumes about their capacity to think transdisciplinary and bridge barriers between old sectors and current innovation.
"Amruta and Poonam's outstanding achievement at the SmartIdeathon Competition highlights NMIMS University's firm belief in promoting innovation and nurturing their creativity," said Dr. Suseelendra Desai, Dean, School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology. I am confident that this is only the beginning of their adventure and that they will go on to win numerous other awards."
September 7, 2022: In order to offer a comprehensive education in agriculture and related fields, the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAST), Shirpur, the first school of agriculture under SVKM's NMIMS, has begun accepting applications for its four-year professional undergraduate degree BSc (Hons)Agriculture, programme.
The curriculum was created in accordance with the ICAR's suggested syllabus to ensure that students' learning is in line with the national curriculum. The school will soon apply for ICAR accreditation, giving students the same opportunities as those found in other institutions. The academic and practical portions of the curriculum are evenly balanced, and all practical sessions are held in well-furnished laboratories or on a farm. The students are focused on an agri-business viewpoint and will also be exposed to several research institutes. The students will comprehend the rural environment of agriculture and related industries, as well as the socioeconomic circumstances of farmers and issues, particularly in relation to the different pests, diseases, and physiological issues that crops and animals must deal with. The faculty helps the students plan interactive outreach events so they may develop their communication skills and use a variety of information management techniques. The two-month industrial internship offers a chance to learn about entrepreneurship while closely observing how an industry operates on a daily basis.
